Managing this- shortage of bedding

I am still confounded that my girls don't like shredded paper........at least for the nest boxes!

DH and I have stocked up on leaves to use for bedding for the winter. The girls don't mind it, it's free, and we still use straw in the nestboxes.
Our woodshavings are lovely, but at nearly $6 a bale it's getting out of hand for us.

In the summer I use dry grass clippings for bedding, the fall I use leaves, and winter I make my own pine bedding. Ask around, and see if anyone local has a wood workshop. Often they are looking for a free way to dispose of their wood shavings. Just avoid cedar, black walnut, sycamore, (all I can think of off top of my head).

I dont use wood shavings anymore either... I have a rather large coop and I have about 6-8 straw bales as bedding for the winter. I throw a few extras in their and leave them with the strings on for them to hop on.
