Mandarin Duck Eggs: Artificial Versus Natural Incubation

Now chickboss.... why did you go and delete that post before I could respond to it?

By the way, I like these kind of intermediate incubation discussions as well. And I like sharing what I've learned (or am learning) with others.

Alright, in addition to the six white mandarin eggs that I have developing in the incubator. I am setting 13 mandarin eggs under two different broody cochin hens this afternoon. I will then candle them after 5 to 7 days and transfer those that are developing to another incubator. I suspect this will improve the hatch rate. The eggs that my hens began laying yesterday I will allow them to incubate naturally. By doing so, I'll have three mandarin hatches within the next month using three different incubation techniques: artificial, natural, and natural transferred to artificial. It will be interesting to see which method gets the best hatch rates.

Scott, I did buy the Brinsea mini (wish me luck) and have Mandy and call eggs in it, as well as, 12 eggs in an older incubator. My calls nor my mandies will sit. I had 1 hen broody for about a week and then she abandoned.
Now, I am looking for a Ringed Teal pair. I hope I have decent luck with these eggs. Good luck to you with yours!

I think you'll do well with the Brinsea Mini. I hatched out 7 calls from the Brinsea earlier this spring, and I've got 6 mandarin eggs in there now... all developing fine.

Sorry to hear about your mandarin hen. My white mandarin hen laid her second egg today. It will be interesting to see how many she lays and if she stays put. I've currently got a total of 10 white mandarin eggs and 9 regular mandarin eggs incubating. That doesn't include however many my white hen lays. When are your mandarin eggs due to hatch? Good luck and keep us posted!
