Mangy looking chicken - lice?? PICS

the new answer to lice is diametacious earth food grade repeat food grade, google it to find out what and how it does it .it is not a chemical or poison. dust the birds very lightly repeat--very-lightly.
mainly lightly dust the perches ,put some on the nesting material and throw a cup into their dust bath. in 2 days no lice and they wont reapear if you lightly dust the perches and nestboxes every month or so .you can also mix it into their food , and it punctures the worms and kills them by dehydrating them. it kills any thing that doesn't have a skeleton .it is what they use to eradicate bed bugs. but dont try and use the pool filter stuff, it is poison. try it on an ant nest ,,

Thanks Poultry Fan. I'm a licensed pool operator and have worked with DE before. It's certainly nothing new, has been used as a filter media for years. The food grade type of DE you're talking about is often used as a preventive by those you don't want to use harmful chemicals but my personal opinion is that it does not help with major infestations. That being said, I have used it in the past and did not find it helpful, I was using it when I introduced the two new hens that brought the lice into my flock. The debates about DE on this site could make you cross-eyed!! I might start using it again as a preventive in the bedding and nest boxes though. Thanks again for your input, I appreciate the advice.

Thank you so much for the informaton !!! It appears we had a pretty bad infestation of Mites and had no idea what to look for. We had 4 birds die before we were able to treat them. One thing we notced (but could not find confirmation of) is that the combs of the very sickest (and eventually dead) birds, turned to a very light red or pinkish color.
