Maran Cockerel?

These middle-of-the-road birds are sure frustrating, aren't they?

It seems to have too much comb for a pullet, but not near enough color for a cockerel.

Any red/copper coming through on the wings? That would mean male.

Can we get a pic of the bird standing, profile shot? I'm leaning toward pullet, but will be interested to see how this one plays out

No copper really coming through anywhere. The pullets even have the nice copper necks already. This guy is pretty much just black still. Lots of copper on the other cockerels. I'll try to get a standing picture.

Ugh, he wasn't very cooperative with getting a good profile shot.

I included some back shots. The pullets already have a good bit of copper in their necks, the cockerels have copper capes going on. Then there's this guy

Any update on this bird? I also have a "middle-of-the-road" marans that's about 12 weeks. I'd love to know if you figured this one out!

And the verdict is.... pullet? I'm still a little afraid to believe it before she produces an egg, to be honest, but every other cockerel in the hatch is crowing, has unmistakable saddle and/or hackle feathers and gorgeous copper capes, very red large combs and pendulous red wattles. The pair of definite pullets have nice copper necks. This bird is all black, still has pale comb/wattles that haven't crown much in the past 5 weeks, and is a bit smaller than all the other cockerels. Not a copper feather in sight. Either an off-color sport, or maybe one of the breeders' Cuckoo Marans roosters snuck in and made me a little Marans sex link?

At this point, I'm holding on to her and hoping for a nice egg.

Compared to my others, she has almost no feathering on her legs as well. I'm really starting to think one of the Mama Marans may have stepped out on the Marans cockerel
