Hi, i hope this is the right category for this question. Just wondering how well Penedesenca's and black copper marans lay. A few a week? Obviously probably not as well as a rhode island, but are they decent layers? And hows the size? anyone know?

Hi,
My Marans lay from 3 to 5 eggs a week.
The less frequently they lay, the darker the eggs are.

Most of my girls lay a large egg.

Concerning Marans: Actually they lay just as well as a Rhode Island Red - The only differences may be that REALLY dark layers give about 3-4 a week. The eggs themselves are on average, large to extra large in size.

I own both & marans & penedesencas are just as productive as RIR, or Plymoth rocks.

Marans are amazing layers, I pretty much get an egg a day all year from my marans Except in the summer.
In the summer my marans stop laying eggs in our TX heat.

Penedesencas are pretty much the same, they lay very well almost every day of the year, except in winter. In the winter I can expect an egg every other day.

I too am torn between BCMs and Penedesenca chickens. I know both lay DARK eggs, but which lay the darkest out of the two and are Penedesencas really flighty and avoid human contact even if they are held a lot as chicks?

yes they are flighty but great in wooded areas as they are very alert. they lay very dark eggs better than marans I would say. generally not as dark but still very dark.
very heat tolerant and stand confinment well.
some of my are wild. most dont care if I am around or not but are not lap chickens

How do your Penedesencas manage your winter weather? Also, are you breeding Olive Eggers: Cream Legbars x Penedesencas? If so, how do they overwinter in your area? Thank you.
