Marans Eggs

I have a question concerning Marans eggs. When a young pullet first starts laying them, will they be dark brown from the start or will they start out light and get darker as they get older?

My understanding is that egg colouration gets lighter, not darker, over time. However, it takes a little while for any pullet's laying parts to get working properly, so perhaps this aspect may be affected like shape, size, and even the presence of a shell, for example.
