Marans Madness March Hatch Along.....

Pink chick, go find some eggs and set them under her now. If she stays on them then pull the switcheroo when the Barnie eggs come! Do it at night and she will never know.

My Broody just hatched out some of those special strange feathered birds and I had to take them back. But I put two little BCM chicks under her to make her happy.

I can't believe I missed this thread! I have been so busy hatching the BCM's out that I didn't see this! I got about 6-7 chicks 5 days ago, and then 3 more yesterday. There are 11 more in the incubator now and a bunch more over the next 10 days all from different lines so i can see who I like the best.

I am going to have to be very good at banding them so as not to confuse the lines!

That's it then....she's going to a mamma!
When I get home from the grocery store and feed store today I will throw together a broody house and move her to her own spot. Poor girl, 3 other hens where piled in there with her sitting on her head and trying to crawl under her yesterday undoubtedly trying to help her cause and give her more eggs.......but man what a good girl, she just stayed the course and wouldn't let anyone nudge her out of her spot.
I've not hatched eggs out under a broody before, stopped a broody's broodiness by tossing new chicks under her.... but, I think this will be more exciting than the incubator.
Will post photo's of new broody house and Mamma to be later today after I finish set up and building.
Good thing a broody house is not as time consuming and elaborate as a chicken coop. Shouldn't take more than a couple of hours I suspect.

me thinks I'll just walk around with one of these smiles all day........ear to ear..........I didn't think anyone was going to go broody ever again, and to think that I was jealous of my closest friend who has 8 broody hens right now.

I'm in! Just set a huge batch of CM and BCM last night at 7pm.
I have 14 Cuckoo, 1 Cuckoo mix, and 9 BCM, along with extras in now for a staggered hatch. The 9 eggs on the left are due March 11th.

I have heard that when one goes broody they all go broody. I have 6 who are trying hard now.

You are going to love it. You do NOTHING! No turning, no power outage issues, no humidity worries--nada! Just some food and water and 21 days. Or you can steal them out at day 18 and put in the hatcher...

LOL....last night I threw 2 golf balls under her and this morning she is sitting nice and tight on them and they are very warm. Who would have thought that golf balls would make her happy.

Sounds good to me! I'll be setting some of my cuckoo marans sometime this month. I'll post back when I do. If anyone wants to join in and doesn't have any marans eggs, PM me and I'll make you a good deal in honor of our March Madness!

Hello all

This is my first attempt at hatching eggs. I'll be getting some assorted marans from little_grey_bantam and i'm so excited! But I wanted to test run the first time or two with my own flock's eggs to make sure i'm not going to screw this up too bad. I'm so nervous something will happen and i'll have to drive my husband insane when I go out and buy another 25 peeps to make me feel better.

I'd love some chocolate eggs to add to the incubator! Or the fridge....

Hello everyone! I am setting up my hatcher today to stabilize it for lockdown on Sunday. I have seen several pics with different setups. I have 2 LG forced air incubators that I am using. In the hatcher, do I set the egg carton with the eggs directly on the wire floor or should I put something like a cloth over the wire. Also, if I do put something over the wire, will it effect the humidity? My hubby works at the hospital and brings home surgical drapes that cannot be used in the OR..(once supplies are opened they are no longer sterile and must be disposed). I thought about cutting one of these drapes to fit the bottom of the hatcher. Any thoughts? Thanks and keep posting pics...I love those babies!
