Marans... male or female?

I believe that raising them with Mamma they do feather out faster and are hardier birds, this has been my experience anyway.

My BCM females also feather out faster than the males.

Sorry to hijack but... is this always the case? I have a FBCM baby who is 3.5 weeks old and "he" definitely has a comb on him but it isn't pink at all... just yellowish... and "he" feathered out at the same rate as my olive egger who is definitely a girl...

Any chance it's a girl with a big comb? Or is it 100% certain to be a roo??

Hi Runalong. Welcome to BYC. Did you hatch the Marans from your own hens? Or where did you get them? I hunted for hatching eggs for my broody hen and found them in Red Bluff

Right now I have two FBCM chicks from the same batch, same parents.

I thought I would try the day old feather sexing technique. These chicks were born June 11th.
According to that technique there was a male and female as it turns out the small fully feathered chick is a female and the big half feathered chick is a male.
The big chick also has a big dark pink comb, big large legs. The little chick hardly has a comb showing and has a more compact body, shorter legs.
The other FBCM chicks I have grew up to be females. Yellow smaller combs when they were older chicks. More compact bodies.

The FBCM parents were imported from France. I don't know if it is a different line, trait or? maybe a throw back? I have no idea but he is much bigger.
But there has been "talk" of the FBCM chicks with more white on them being males. If that is true, then again, the big chick is a male.
I haven't had enough chicks (or the time) to see if there is any merit to this thought.

All the chicks were raised by hens in outside runs.

It will be interesting to see what the big chick turns into, but the little one, I am pretty sure is a female. Small yellow comb, compact body.
