My first Marans egg!
From a pair of Wheatens that I bought a few months ago. Obviously, the Mrs. has settled down and is ready for breeding season.

How's the color?

You can see the colors from my Araucanas so you can tell the shading. And I put 2 Welsummer eggs there for contrast as well as a Jersey Giant light brown egg on the other end.
Can't wait for more!!

Not bad!

Here's the eggs my wheatens came out of (LR -- bantam araucana, wellie, bantam leghorn, Marans). I'd say yours compares pretty favorably.

Well, thank goodness! I am so happy with the first egg but wasn't sure what to expect from a wheaten. I have a small flock of young cuckoo Marans and I am not holding my breath that theirs will be this dark. I will be hatching plenty from this pair though. The roo is just a big old sweetie and I hope to get his size on some of his daughters.

Very very Pretty!! I love how the eggs look! What lovely colors everyone!
I'm getting pale ick right now. Not too awful, but still lighter than they can shoot out.
Take care,
Tina

Seems to me the feather color has nothing to do with the capability of laying a really dark beautiful egg in the Marans breed. Pretty interesting in being everyone seems to want BCM's. So far I have seen some really dark eggs from Wheaten, and Cuckoos that are just as dark as some of the better BCM's. Just an observation. Hmm? I think all the Marans are beautiful, but I guess the proof is in the pudding!

Nice eggs guys!

I have a question about improving egg color. If your chicks came from a not so dark egg would you introduce a Roo from a dark egg to improve the egg darkness? The Roo determines the egg color right?

Congrads to all with their new little Marans chicks!!!!

Chicken the Roo determines the color of his offsprings eggs. Not to his associated hens. Take your darkest egg layer and breed back to him. If a new Roo came from a darker color then yes his offspring will throw a darker color. Hope this helps.

I thought both parents contributed? If not then when a marans roo is bred to an ameraucana wouldn't the resultant offspring lay brown and not olive? I know this topic has come up before but I thought no one had a conclusive answer

I would definitely think he would improve the color but how much depends on a lot of factors?
