Marans Thread for Posting Pics of Your Eggs, Chicks and Chickens

Yeah, I'm just going to have to figure out who the culprit is and tag her I guess, and say "Hey, thats my Not the Marans Hen!" cause I have no clue either! Its an egg color scale issue, and its the stupid egg thats not marans, not the chicken! And I'm gonna keep her and let her lay pretty eggs, too! They're still pretty. I just wont let her make Cuckoo Marans babies, cause, well, that wont promote making dark egg babies, will it? Or will it? Man, I am such a novice. I love this place.

# 3 Is STILL A MARANS EGG! WOW! FRANCE IS GREAT!
1 - White egg : example : Bresse-Gallic or Leghorn, Braeckel for foreign breeds.
2 - Tinted egg : Wrongly called brown in most of the foreign breeds standards as for instance the Rhode-Island. As well, it is the colour of eggs from numerous industrial hybrid stocks, never laid by a pure-bred Marans.
3- Red egg : its a Marans egg but its an unsatisfying selection. The colour is insufficient when its usual in the stock which didnt show any occasional superior specimens.
4- The real extra-red Marans egg
Note : The colour of the egg is not better than the egg n°3, but the pigments quantity is more significant, its stained repartition is uneven, and thats why the extra-red egg is more valuable. A little brightness should always highlight this egg.
Experience : The egg n°4, placed on a natural red earthenware bottom, has to be a bit darker.
Note : the same hen can lay an egg that is slightly darker with an even colour in the beginning of the laying (first 20 eggs).
5 to 9 Extra-russet-red egg (chocolate)
You may notice the spherical, globular shape which is typical to the Marans egg, and the brightness is always an extra property for this egg. Unfortunately, the hens laying eggs 7, 8 and 9 are not often selected for the body standard : light or skimpy subjects, squirrels tails, impure feathers and colours, etc You cant succeed in all matters, though! The selection of the Marans is a very hard work and a long exacting task.
8 and 9 Exceptional eggs or rather accidental : the colour is close to the unalloyed pigment. Once again, you may notice that such eggs are obtained in the beginning of the laying. The fact that the shells pigments tone down in the middle of the laying period is normal. The best shells stabilize around 6 and 7. A good stock can produce an important proportion of eggs 5 and 6. A drastic selection done years after years must maintain constantly that stock.
You can value the quality of a laying hen according to the colour of the eggs in the beginning of the laying after the first 20 eggs and the regularity of this colour during the greater part of the season.

I m so glad I found this thread, I bought a doz of Bevs marans that were just a mix of colors, I got Black/blue coppers, wheaton and bbs eggs. And I got this guy out of the deal, Im woundering if anyone knows the color? We call him blondie..lol. I ended up with 5 roos and 4 hens but something got my hens. Im interested in working on this color anyone know what it is or how its made so I know what kind of hens to go with him? Also I got a really nice black copper or wheaton roo I dont knw how to tell the difference anyone know they look the same to me.

Yeah he came from bev, Im sure he was a fluke not something she bred for at least nothing on her websight...trust me I looked. WE really like him and would love to get him some hens Im just tring to figure out what color hens I should look for and yes he is blue based. at first I thought birchen but dont the burchens have white hackle feathers..his is blond u can tell better in person the color wount photograph right me. plus he has the redish feathers in his saddle. I did not see those on the birchen
