Kelly, I agree with Nivtup. You need a bit more time. Also, it helps if you take a shot with the wings closed. You will see a black bar on the roos. I think it took us 3 weeks to be able to know for sure.

I love wheatens. LOVE Them.

On the wheaton chicks - we have all been treated to chickie sexing now - so vent them babies and we will know for sure! I say girls! All chicks are girls. Until they crow. Because I say so?

And what is a Thousand Flower Marans? For Goodness sakes, if you say Mille Fleur Marans, I'm gonna go nuts. Is that what that means? I'm losing it. I am making and have Mille Fleur everything else, why not join that bandwagon? Mille Fleur Frizzle D'Uccles, Mille Fleur Cochin Frizzles, Mille Fleur Cochins.....Mille Fleur Marans??? Ooohhh!

Gotta love Wikipedia:
Mille-fleurs literally means "thousand flowers" and refers to a background made of many small flowers and plants. It was an especially popular motif in the applied arts and crafts during the Middle Ages in Europe. Mille-fleurs style is frequently seen in 15th century French and 16th century Low Countries tapestry.

I have no idea why I said something about "weakness" in Cochins. ??

Probably just a sentence fragment that got orphaned. Cochins are awesome, I have 6.

onthespot...I agree about the Foghorn Leghorns. In general type and structure, they're already pretty similar, eh? Just a few cosmetic traits to work around and viola!

Don't Marans have Cochin in their ancestry? Another dose of sweetness and a dash of broodiness might do 'em some good.

I guess I'll be on the hunt for some Millie Foghorn and/or Cochin eggs.

Oh, him again!

Off topic, but one of my favs! Oh, and that list is getting filled quickly - I have been contacting folks and sending out eggs - but the squeeky wheel, you know! I need to start a better tracking system so I can stay fair, and get to people on the list, but other than that, Mr. Frizzy has been Gettin Busy!! You will be happy with the chicks, most are frizzly or cochin, and very interesting colors/patterns...I am seeing the colors emerge now on my own first batch...I thought some feathers were just black and white, but there is Brown in there too! And a couple are Blue/Black Feathered? Must be the Silkie Cochin mother hen?
I'll be in touch sooner than later, hope you want those eggies! What is your time frame? Tina

I have been considering breeding my Mille Fleur cochins - I have two roosters and several hens - but little motivation to do so. I bought the flock earlier this year just to add the two hens to Mr. Frizzy's pen. The Hens are mostly Buff/mottled white and some black spots, they are lighlty mille - the pattern is there but light - the Roos are more pronounced. They are project birds from Eggchel. What do you think - should I? I was considering advancing my own Mille Fleur Cochins anyhow, and that would possibly help with the Thousand Flower Marans?? What do you think? Motivation?

I think I need to go take a picture of that big ol mille fleur roo someone gave my friend.. he is something ELSE!!! If he had a single comb, I'd be all over it! Heck, I might be all over it anyhow. She said I could have/use him if I wanted. I think I will do that. I will go take a pic, Maybe someone here can tell me what they think is in his background...

Hi all- I think I've read almost all 222 pages of this thread over the past few weeks.

I have a dumb question- when does the "copper" come out in BC Marans? I've got a few random marans chicks in my brooder, the oldest two are 4 weeks, and the younger two are a few days old. 1 of the big chicks is definitely a 'roo- he has a big pink comb. His feathers are getting pretty full, but there is no copper to him. Could he just be a black marans? The other big one is a blue, she (fingers crossed) isn't getting any copper either. One of my young ones is already getting some copper wing feathers that my other two never showed.

Thanks... and thanks for this awesome thread, I've learned a LOT
