Well, I just found some good information on Wheatens, concerning the breast color, etc...

Near the bottom of this page they show a cockerel photo with some red in the breast, and a photo of the same bird at maturity with no red in the breast.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this is what will happen with my Blue Wheaten boy too as he matures. I'm not sure of his exact age. I got him in May, and he was already a few months old. I'd guess he's between 7 and 8 months old now.

I am hoping to get some advice on which Roosters I should keep. I don't have the pictures right now but here are the descriptions:

1) Roo has feathered shanks but a very short tail. Color is good

2) Roo has feathered shanks but has alot (alot) of red, good tail

3) Roo has no feathered shanks, good tail and color

4) Roo has no feathered shanks and too much red, good tail

5) Roo has no feathered shanks, is very dark and just beginning to get color in his hackles and chest. Good tail

I had read that an overly red male may be helpful when bred to a mostly black hen.
Should I keep a really red male for that purpose. Only a few of my hens have good color in the hackles. Mostly black. They are only about 14 weeks old

Also, is there a standard on color of shanks and toes? A few of mine have very light colored shanks and feet and white toenails. The others have a darker slate with dark toenails.

All the combs will need work. I am just trying to figure out the basics right now.
Body type varies and I will work on that later too.

I would really like to know what you would do, who you would have stay. I would like to keep at least 2 and if you say more, I can do that too. Are there any obvious culls?

If you want feathered legs you need a feathered leg roo...If you have hens that are black and you want more copper then you need a roo with more coppering on his chest..If your birds are only 14 weeks they still have more feathering to do those roos could get bigger more beautiful tails... If you want to take the copper color off the males chest mate with a solid black hen...

But if you are wanting to keep feather legs..The roo has to be feathered leg...

Is it only the Roo that passes the genes for feathered shanks on?
I read somewhere that the feathered shanks were one of the easiest issues to fix.

Thank you 3 Chickens. Can you tell me about the color of the legs? I have a few that have whitish, pinkish legs and white toes. This just seems odd and off. Is there a SOP for the leg color?

The legs should be slate with pinkish bottoms... But yours are young that could still change...
