Went back to the feed store, none of the little chickies look like the picture you posted of the pullet. It was hard to tell the difference between the australorps and the marans, the all looked like the pic you posted of the cockerel, including the one I got. And, he has dark legs. Please tell me he is a girl

Oh dear...sometimes it is hard to tell from the photos. You will know as soon as the wing feathers come in, the pullet will be blacker and the cockerel
striped. Here is another one..
I am a little worried about the hint of yellow down in that photo and the feet look a little yellowish?
Maybe it is just the light. Worst case scenario it could be a Barred Rock cockerel-best case pullet of either Marans or BR.
Fingers crossed, anyway..

Ceerrraap! I don't want to wait until the wing feathers start to come in. There is no yellow in the down, it is white, but the feet are yellow. the legs are dark but the feet are yellow. What color are they supposed to be?

Their feet are supposed to be white. Either it's a barred rock or it's parents have been crossed with a barred rock somewhere along the way. Barred rocks have yellow legs and feet.
It does look like a female chick to me. Males have lighter colored down and a larger white spot on their heads.

well, I already have a BR, she is my favorite girl, but I am trying to vary my collection and not duplicate chickens (except the cute little fuzzball silkie I got yesterday as an oopsy

). I think I will bring him/her back tomorrow, maybe. we will see..... Maybe I will hold out for a copper maran.. I need a bigger coop

Okay so I posted this in the hatching thread too, but I have a question for you experienced Marans hatchers:

I have 17 total Marans and 3 Ameraucanas in the bator right now, and it is day 21. So far, all 3 of my Ameraucanas took several hours to pip, then just minutes to zip and finally all 3 hatched. My Marans, however, made a single little peak of a pip hours ago. Only 4 of them have pipped from 5-10 hours ago, and that is all. I'm a tad worried. I've heard of pipping taking a LONG time, but is it normal for so many to take so long? I just want a reassurance that they're all fine, and will eventually zip and hatch or simply pip, THEN zip and hatch tonight or tomorrow or something. . . Because so far, since those few pips, nothing has happened.

To help a little more, I'm using a Hovabator forced air, and humidity goes from 65% to 69%, depending on if an Ameraucana just hatched.

I had to help mine ... out of 18 eggs ... I only got 4 chicks ... I'm not a pro on the marans ... but I know its harder for them! At least that is what I was told. I know what your going through ... and I know how hard tonight is going to be for you ... Maybe someone else can walk you through it better than me. Its hard to sit there and do nothing ...
