Drom...let em ride... Some of the super darkies can take a LONG time.. Next round it is the darkest by themselves... Only 8's... I want to give the darkest the best chance... Wanna throw in some darkest of the darkies for the April Festivus??? It will take me a couple days for a couple good ones... I only have two hens that really kick out the really spectacular ones... I suppose I could put them in a separate hatcher on day 18 also. You in?

Oh and I almost forgot

Thanks Geebs! Yes, well I opened the bator up quickly 14 times during lockdown to move the chicks, and this RCOM is so wonderful, it gets back up to the temp and humidity literally in seconds. However, that may have killed some of these that are left. One really dark one was rolling around last night and now it is still. The thing is this incubator has a very slick floor and and chicks couldn't stand up in it. Their legs were splayed out underneath them, so I decided it would be better to move them out and risk losing a few of the eggs.

I think I do want to hatch a few more. This is so fun

Get some of the rubbery non skid shelf liner.. It is cheap, and good for traction. And you can just throw it away each time.. (opening bator)... I have done the same thing a lot... I cheat and take my whole bator in the bathroom and get the humidity equalized by running a hot shower or using pans of hot boiling water to bring the room humidity up so that when I open the bator there is no appreciable difference. That is a great cheat for emergency chick removal... I had to do it this hatch because a chick got it's leg caught....and it was the first chick hatched.

I wish I had thought of that. The floor moves back and forth during days 1-18 but when I pulled the egg dividers out before lockdown I should have put something down then. I just didn't realize it would be a problem.

By the way, those are some awesome pictures you posted yesterday. How did you get your little subjects to stand still and pose with the cup and flowers?

I got them to stand still by promising them scratch and corn!!!! (ha ha)

It wasn't easy... It was a numbers game!!! I probably took a million pix to get it... It helps that I have a background in photography....he he..

14 times and you still sustained an amazing hatch.... If I were you... I would try leaving the dividers in for separating hens... so you know who hatched from what egg... I wish I had something like that to help me sort at hatch time... I am rigging something up

Sorry to interrupt, havn't been here for awhile and thought I may share a pic of what strict culling results in,,here is a pic of some eggs from our first year laying pullets,,front dozen is FBC,and back dozen is wheaton marans. Eggs on very far back side are from cuckoo marans,,

The Black Copper eggs are gorgeous but the Wheatens look like they still could use improvement - Who did they originate from?
