Bragging rights... 7 BHB's hatched in my bator!!! out of 10 shipped BC eggies.... 4 out of 7 shipped Coch(mottled and mille fleur) from the Crazy egg chain also... Great hatch!!! We are nearing the deadline so that should be the official count but if by some chance another one or two hatches... that would be great!!!! Thanks to you all that sent the good hatchy vibes...

I will post pix when they are all dry.. Probably tomarrow.

Congrats on your BHB babies Geeb! I still need to get some pics posted of my BHBs that hatched out. 8 out of the 10 eggs hatched. They were the easiest hatch I've ever had with Marans. Those must have been some great eggs.. they were shipped from CA to FL and still did good. They are wild little things, and the noisiest bunch of Marans I've had so far too! I keep holding them but they are still wild as heck LOL!

I have been reading the Marans forum for a while and have a couple of comments to make.

#1 On my black Coppers with white legs I cull because I believe that they are mixed with the Wheaton blood. I have noticed that with the white leg Black Copper the Hackle will be lighter more like the Wheaton. And they will show more white feathers. I raise a large number of chicks and this is what I see.

#2 I believe that we must single mate and mark all of our Marans chicks if we are to have any idea of what we are breeding. Our Marans have been crossed with just about every breed of dark egg layer trying to improve the egg color.

#3 I have no interest in the egg shows, only shows sponsered by APA for type. I no longer have an interested in belonging to any of the groups promoting the Marans to the APA. Most of the groups are self serving and do not have the best interest of the Marans first. Snowbird

flgardengirls.... We are some lucky duckies I have adult females of these birds and they are the rock stars of my coup. They are a steady layer and still produce a #6 by the chart after nearly a year in a steady lay... I love my Birdies... The bonnes are the healthiest strongest chicks I have ever hatched. And that packaging... Isn't that something... Anyone wanna learn how to package eggs for shipping let me know.. 7 out of 10 viable eggs so far have hatched. That is over the 50 percent expected and for an order of 6 eggs.. Well ... hmmm.... WOW. We will sure miss Donna!!! She must have a good feed programs because these chicks are LIVELY. Tough little buggers... My hens are too. Fat butterballs... Loud and friendly and independant w/o being flighty.

Congrats! My BHB BCM's hatched 7 yesterday too! I am tickled pink! I think this was my very best hatch rate out of mail order eggs so far! I agree about the nice fat healthy chicks. None needed help pipping & zipping and they are so healthy! I could not be more pleased

A local BCM breeder gave me these two as freebies when I bought some BCM's from her. Can you guys tell me if they are pullets or roos?
