No she's not laying yet and she should any day. The other four breeds a speckled sussex, red and black sexlink, and an Easter Egger that are all the same age have started laying so i'm waiting. I'm hoping for the really dark eggs but i hear it is the copper marans or the wheaten marans that do that.

i am at the point with my six week olds of trying to make a decision on which roo (just one) to keep. one of my pullets has tons of brown on her, and one pullet is nearly black, so when considering how to balance them out, it's kind of up in the air. these birds are supposedly of of jeane line, which i have heard numerous times have a tendency toward greater mossiness than is "desirable" generally, while they are growing up.

the least mossy roo is also the least dominant (smallest wattles/comb, least aggressive) and i can't decide whether that's a pro or con in thinking of keeping that one. for sure, it is the biggest cockerel.

Hathor... your number two roo... the one with the least color looks like one of those wierd really great hens... I am not kidding...I can send you a pic as an adult... Do not cull till there is a saddle... This could be a hen.

And also... Mine were mossy and now are black with a nice green sheen... I will get a pic right now of my rooster feathered hen...she had pointy feathers too....

Based on your advice, I waited a few more days and it turned out the one which I was considering keeping as our only roo is the one that crowed and is showing colored saddle feathers. I really hope the others are pullets! It's just weird since the one that IS a pullet looks so different. Fingers crossed anyway.

They can look very different based on the hens.... Only the breeder knows what hen came from where... I have 10 hens... and not very many of them look alike. I have two from BHB and some from Cree and some from Bryant and some from another breeder etc... you get the idea... They all look different as do their offspring.. the ones from Bryant are the slow feathering ones in my group. I know I pitched hens early on... as no one gets 100 percent roos!!! If I hadn't decided to keep 100 percent of what I got next round from the breeder well.... guess what??? I would have pitched them all agian!!!! Live and learn... Fingers crossed... If I cause you to waste feed.. My apologies... The gamble if you end up with an extra hen or two is soooo worth it.

It was good advice since I would have gotten rid of the other two suspected roos last week, but now I think they look more like adult hens. No saddle color and no crowing yet from them. Now, I just have to find homes for my Ameracauna cockerals...

that's a very pretty roo do you have hens to go with him?

Geebs I have some like that too Jeane's so they will feather up correct? I haven't gotten rid of anything yet. I do have a really red roo in the fattening pen but he's not old enough yet and some I would have bet were roos but they are not turning into beautiful girls....my Goldens are still little babies I think I have 3 girls and 2 boys. I really have some nice CM's need to get pics so you all can see but I know some of them are carrying recessive white so I hope one will not be they are really nice maybe I'll take up White Marans .....

Lotsapaints... I do not know if they will feather up correctly.... It depends on the breeder and the birds... I just know what I and several others have dealt with. You hear it a lot... all I got was roosters. Doesn't really makes sense does it???
