LOL! They are cute, and very sweet, whatever they are. If the two are pullets, they will stay in a eating egg only flock. If the two are boys, and don't turn out to be something special or Marans, they will be nicely re-homed. That said, let one of them draw blood on me, well, it may be a different story..like Rooster Caccitore??

Hi Debbi!

Fuglee is a boy and I don't believe that he is a splash.........you know as I sit here typing this I keep scrolling back down the page looking at him over and over again.......nope, not a splash . I know nothing of the Birchens so I hope someone who breeds them or is familiar with them comes around to give you their opinion/s.
Patches of blue/white barring??? It will be interesting to see them in a few more weeks when they have feathered out.

Hi Pink!

Well, that's the best term I can give it. Told someone else, it looks more like spotting on the pullet looking chick? Poor Fuglee, his look more like stripes, lol. They are all so ready to get out of the brooder! They've been without their light at night now, for about a week. They were so hot, they would all get to the end of the brooder and spread out, so what I've read about the light being on for weeks, would depend on the weather and inside temps for sure, and it is warm here. This was even after I adjusted to a 40 watt bulb! They all do a little "night song" right before they all bed down. By the time the coop/run is built, they will be more than ready for it! The other two chicks are getting blacker, these two in the pics seem to be getting bluer with spots and stripes. Guess we'll see as time goes by. They sure are changing from day to day, and growing like weeds! They all get handled at least three times a day. One will fuss when I pick her up (Precious), but the others seem to enjoy it. "Pretty" would jump out of the box into my hands if I let her! Having not had any chickens for the last 18 years, this has all made me smile...so, whatever they are, they're part of my little family.

Ha, ha, I was being a tad sarcastic. It's been down right hot, and UGLY humid. Yesterday morning when I stepped outside at 6am, the humidity was just suffocating. Today is better...so far.

I wish it was just warm here! HA It is hotter than blue blazes! I couldn't even hardly stand to be outside the past two days!

yeah. you and i are in the same area, and we've all been under an extreme heat advisory for several days now, so maybe you have too? it's almost impossible to do ANYTHING outside. my poor husband and son work on site on our community and i feel SO bad for them lately.

I go to bed very early just to get up at 3 am to do my outside feeding and watering. Byt the time it is noon here, and we're alot cooler then you guys, it is 90 degrees. My indoor brooder babies I feed twice a day, and that has changed too. So, we just start earlier and call it by mid day until late at nite. I have 20 out door pen. Luckily I have several hundred feet of hose. And by then end of my feeding and watering, even at nite I am soaked. not from water either, I turn the water on me then. lololol

I have sooooooo much sympathy for all of you being hit by the hot weather.......when it is that hot it is miserable. It rarely gets hot like that here... ok ok we probably get about a week of it every summer, but is nothing like what you all have going on. Today it is suppose to be a tar bubbling 75, wish I could send it your guys way.

How do all of your birds do in that type of heat? Is there something you all do that is special to help cool them? If it gets over 90 here my birds all stand out side with their wings held out off their bodies, panting. I have a misting system that I can run from a hose in front of the coops runs, they just stand there and let it mist them, except the Marans, they don't care for it, but they get used to it. However, my Wellies expect me to get the spray nozzle and hose them down, they will stand there in the spray of the hose until they are drenched, the only birds that don't run when the hose is out, they are crazy like that. They also are the only birds that will not go into the coop when it is raining. The Marans on the other hand are like my Pygmy goats.......one drop of rain and they are headed for cover.

STAY COOL EVERYONE!

I have some meaties growing out. They are a month old. With this heat (heat advisory in effect) of 110 heat index and not even a breeze, I though sure I would lose them all. So far, so good. I think the answer is shade. All my coops and runs are fully shaded, and I think that really helps alot. I do let them all out to free range daily, and they all head to the timber for a dust bath.

Hi, Marans friends! For those of you who haven't seen the proposed standard (we're hoping that it will be approved this fall), here is part of it:

Shape—Male

COMB: Single, moderately large, straight, upright, evenly serrated with five points.
BEAK: Long, stout and well curved.
FACE: Smooth, skin fine and soft in texture.
EYES: Large and prominent.
WATTLES: Medium in size, oval.
HEAD: Moderately large in size, slightly flattened on top.
NECK: Of medium length, broad and deep, well balanced. Hackle well developed, moderately flowing over shoulders.
TAIL: Full, rather short, moderately well spread, carried at an angle of 45 degrees above horizontal.
WINGS: Short, held close to the body, carriage nearly horizontal.
BREAST: Strong, broad, and full, well rounded when viewed from both the front and side.
BACK: Wide at the shoulders, long, flat, slightly tilted to the rear. Slightly more inclined then that of the female.
BODY AND FLUFF: Body deep, long and broad, especially through the shoulders and carried high. Overall rectangular in shape. Fluff medium in length.
LEGS and TOES: Legs set well apart, straight when viewed from the front. Shanks-moderately long and smooth. Toes-four, well spread and straight and of medium length.
PLUMAGE: Moderately tight and smooth textured.

Note - combs should have FIVE points. Another thing that's not discussed much is size...size matters in Marans! They've seemed to be getting smaller consistently - we all need to work hard to keep them good-sized birds!

Those are some great pics of birds...I just love scrolling through what I've missed since I was here last to see all the neat new pics!
