I agree, but I also think that the people out there who are assuming that they are going to have tons of super dark eggs and are going to make lots of money selling them are naive and will quit on it when they realize it is not so simple.
Lots of inexperienced people jump in to breeding all types of animals thinking it is going to be a fun, easy way to make a little money. Rarely true.

Well, at this point I suppose I am really just a novice-fancier. I absolutely love the birds I got from Donna, but in terms of breeding potential, I don't really know what I've got yet. They are very hardy, healthy, beautiful birds. They are going to be a good size. And if they end up laying really nice eggs, that will influence what I want to do. But I have one big problem that a serious breeder really can't have. I can't cull them. I am a really big weenie when it comes to doing things like that. And, if you are serious about breeding, you have to be able to do that. So, I think at this point, I am headed towards the pet-fancier route, but I would like to breed some and even show some if I get a chance to.

you don't need to butcher them to cull. Find a local resource person who will take the ones that don't neccesarily fit your breeding program/space at this exact moment and it makes culling a lot easier.

Yes you're right. I suppose in spite of that fact that they are a fad now, relatively speaking, they are still rare and are probably very easy to place with other people.

That is absolutely true--the best quote I ever heard was from an established horse breeder, and it applies to dogs, other pets, and just about any livestock:

"There is only one sure-fire way to make a small fortune in horses, and that is to start with a large fortune."

Thanks--The item and model numbers are the same above--is that correct?

Ha-you've got that right! There is no animal on earth that will suck money out of your wallet more efficiently than a horse will.

Tina, that's exactly why I haven't gotten any marans eggs this year. I decided to wait until I learned more and to wait for the dust to settle some from the fad.

I thought I'd wait and figure out the good breeders and then worry about eggs. Besides I'm having a terrible time deciding which color to run with

They're so gorgeous.

The hype and fever is so bad now I'm just waiting, watching and reading. Next year so many of the people on the band wagon are going to crash and burn, it will be interesting to say the least.

I do feel bad for the people actually interested in the keeping and breeding of high quality marans in the meantime.

Hmmm, could this be why this thread is such a great place to be?

Drom, that is exactly where I am too, except for the showing part. I am serious about the breed, Im still educating myself, always will be, and I dont know what quality birds I have yet, really. I only learned about lineage AFTER I got my first birds and had Black Copper Eggs in the Bator! I dont think Ill do any showing, although I have gone to poultry shows for years. I was really bummed when they stopped most of them for so long. We've gone to rabbit shows off and on too!
Oh, I understood Marans were not yet accepted by the APA, but they are well on their way?? When are they going to start being shown, or are they already??

As to culling, I too am a weenie, I have to rehome...I try friends and family for pet homes first, roosters are harder to place. I never have a hard time with the hens. Then, off to the Swap Meet. I take a loss, and just give them away.... but thats the way I chose to do it. Now that theres a Craiglist, I'll try that too.

Mostly I want pretty eggs though....I will focus on that. Perhaps later, if you have to cull for show birds, but your lines have nice dark eggs, just are not typey enough, you let me know...they can be in my dark egg flock!! We can work it out! I may have the perfect show specimen, but it may not have that egg color I want, I can hook you up!!
