LOL, yes, I have eggs in my bator. But only 6/12 have swimmers in them.

And who knows how many of those will actually make it full term. Live chicks are always a safer bet.

Yes, you're right. I bought eggs but am not experienced at incubation so the breeder hatched them for me, because she has one of those fabulous Sportsman incubators so I just went and picked up all my chicks.

However, there is one advantage to hatching the eggs yourself. You get to see what color eggs the chicks hatched out of and which hatched from the darkest eggs.

You're right about getting to see the egg color. And these were so nice and dark that I wanted them all to hatch! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the 6 that are developing make it out alive. If at least half hatch I should at least end up with a couple pullets and a couple roos...enough to at least start a flock.

ok guys you have to tell me what you are using to candle. I have wheaton and bc in now on day 10 and nothing I use can I see through these eggs.

Well, I've never candled anything, but if you go back to page 46 here on this thread, there are a couple ideas there.

I was wondering what happened to you and if your hens were laying yet.
Be sure to post more egg pics!

Yeah, I sure do miss being able to hang out and read the BYC forums. I started back to teaching at the end of Aug. and my mom found out she has breast cancer and that was the end of free time.

I don't know why they took so long to start laying but I'm so happy they did. I still haven't figured out if all of them are laying or just a couple. We get an egg a day so far. It's so much fun going out and finding them.

I hope to have more time again. It was so much fun reading through this thread and looking at everyone's pics. Boy, and I thought my eggs were dark. So many of you out there have great looking Marans eggs. Keep posting everyone!!!

Well, hang in there. It is nice hear from you and see your egg pics. That second one is so chocolately looking!!!!! It's a beauty!
Have you tasted them yet? Do Marans eggs taste expensive?
