They are dark, not cheap but dark. I am hoping for a good hatch like we always do and at 7 days had good viening on my RIR eggs. I could not see into the BCM eggs. I cant wait for my new pullet to start laying! Thanks for the warm welcome.

Just let the teenagers out for the first time in a while since its finally not raining. One of the Black Copper pullets has beautiful coppering that is brand new right in her hackles I can only hope that the other girls get theirs to.

Hey everyone! Thanks for the sweet thoughts.

Krista, yes he is still pretty sweet, when we can catch him. He runs away all the time..... I hatched out 16 wheaten/blue wheatens about 3 weeks ago, so he will have lots of girls, but he is in with 5 lovely EEs presently. Thank you again for him. He is so pretty.

Drom, your eggs will be coming and they will be gorgeous!!!!!!! I just found 2 eggs from one of my coops that I didn't expect eggs from. The girls in there were born in July.

We love our Millies. I was really lucky to get those shots. It was one of those nights where the light quality and sunset were perfect. I may submit one somewhere.....I wish I had had a zoom lens with me.

4kidz, how did you know I have a pentax? We just got it a month ago and LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is the k200D slr.

Okay folks. So my mother in law is going to have to accept that we have 50 chicks in the house. I just cannot contemplate putting them out in minus 10 degrees, even with heat lamps, insulation etc. It the lights went out, they would be freezer pops.....So instead of Christmas with the Kranks, we are having Christmas with the Chooks.

My husband and I had our first night without our 3 kids in 2 years. My folks took them so we could clean our house and wrap all the kids presents. We ended up playing our new Guitar Hero until 2 am!!!!!!! Heh heh heh. Bye!

Oops since this is a Marans thread, of course one would think Marans eggs, but these new eggs were actually a Millie and Ameraucana girl. I am waiting any time for my first Davis (not from her directly) pullets to start earning their keep. I can't wait, as right now our egg basket is so pretty with such beautiful eggs including the following:

white brabanter
small cream Millie
light brown EE
blue green EE
Pinkish Buff Orp
Dark Brown Red Star
Blue Ameraucana

We are having a blizzard! They are calling for 12-20 inches. It was minus 1 this morning with a wind chill of minus 15.

At least we have a white Christmas.

Just out of curiosity...

It seems like a lot of people whose copper-black pullets have just started laying are already setting up business to sell hatching eggs and chicks. I find that fascinating.

Those of you who are doing this...I'm just wondering--was this the reason you were drawn to this breed? As an "investment," so to speak? Something to bring in extra income?

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that, especially in this economy. Just curious if anyone just wanted these birds for themselves?

We're not sure what all we'll do with ours, but we'd like to show them (and hopefully advance the cause of getting APA acceptance), and we'd want to hatch and raise at least another generation to point of lay before making any decisions on selecting from our *original* generation. Otherwise, we can't figure out how in the world we'd know what we have, since the hallmark of the breed is the eggs.

Random thoughts on a gloomy day...now I gotta get ready for church--my daughter's been DYING to wear her "fancy" Christmas dress!

I got mine because they are pretty birds and we love the egg color! How fabulous it is to see something so gorgeous like the dark egg every day and get a another new one just like it the following day ( if we are lucky). We only sell extras if someone comes asking for them. Mostly we keep all the birds for ourselves and sell some eggs for eating. There isn't any profit because they eat more than what we sell.
