I have a corporate job that keeps me busy sometimes 10 to 12 hours a day, so this is a hobby for me. It's a way for me to unwind.

I think the drive for the APA acceptance is a great thing.
But I have to admit, I'm still kind of sitting on the fence with regard to showing. While there are some really warm, friendly people who show and breed animals, there are also some who are not. And those people can really suck the joy out of it for me.
I'm having a good time here with my Marans and definitely don't want to get involved in any politics or drama.

If I'm lucky enough to get some good eggs, I might send some of those in to show.

i'm with you, also because of the bio security reasons. Take your best birds to win, and have to cull when you get home... no thanks. But sending your eggs and a five dollar bill, now that's my kinda show!

Ahahaha! I actually offered to help out with the Stockton and Fresno shows and never got a response back from Angie. So, at least I tried to do my part.

They will have an egg show at Fresno this Feb Patty and I think that you need to send the eggies in to Angie by the 4th and the show is on the 21st or something.

Hey I will try and send my eggs to the egg shows but I only have pullets and I hope they lay some dark eggs. I agree about biosecutrity and attitudes in animal showing.

Hey, haven't seen any recent pictures of your pullets Henry. How old are they and when will they start laying?

Oh they are about 10 weeks old I will go take some pictures in the shed now they are very friendly and one has gotten some beautiful coppering I will be away at a boarding school called the Mountain School of Milton academly this semester so they will probably lay when I am away but maybe not till I get back I am not sure. I will go try and take some up to date pictures tomorrow or maybe tonight if I go out and check up on them.

I definitely didn't get them as an investment, I got them for myself, for a pretty egg basket. Dh thinks I'm crazy, he said "they taste like regular eggs right? So why does color matter?" I have to agree, maybe I am a bit crazy

. I have only my mutts laying so far and they were a mix of a lt brn layer with a white, so the eggs are light brown with white underneath

. I got the ameraucana and araucana for the blue/ blue green eggs, ancona, spitz & la fleche for white/light crm, and the marans for dark brown. I will probably make some olive eggers along the way.....
I too thought about showing then decided not to, I had waaaay too much stress with the dog showing, between the politics and biohazard warning, always afraid I'd bring something home. If I ever do sell eggs, then it will only be to help with the feed bill, and even then I can't see charging so much.

I also got mine just for myself. I do sell eggs to a few friends at the barn but primarily just wanted the darker eggs to contrast with my Buff Orpington eggs, and the EE eggs when they start laying. I found the thread on here about the eggs from Jesse Bryant and got on his list for chicks, mostly because I don't have an incubator to use for eggs from anyone else that was too far away. He was close by and had good reviews from others on BYC.
I don't make any money whatsoever. Just a fraction of what I spend on their feed. Lord knows these Marans eat more than the other chickens I've ever had! Also just took 14 roos...out of the 23 chicks I got to be dispatched because there's no market for them around here so definitely not my moneymakers by any means

. I like the breed and think they are docile and easy to keep, but the Orps will always be my favorites because they seem to me to be more friendly and like to be handled more than the BCMs.

I'm a little bit of each....pretty colors is what I like the most...I love to share my eggs for those that want to have birds also, so I want to have pure bred roosters for breeding, but I dont want tons of money for my eggs or at least ridiculous amounts of money...it's embarrassing to me for some reason...I just like chickens....I would rather trade if I had something nice to share as well...

I run at a loss all the time, probably foolish but it's only my hobby...I give away my own hatched birds, purebreds, to people here that often have no idea what they're getting. I try to find Vegetarian homes so they'll at least get a chance to be useful for a while! I've given away beautiful Golden Comets, Cuckoo Marans, Silver Laced Wyandottes, Mottled Houdan, Buff Polish, etc, etc, and others from eggs I've ordered online...some breeds I've hatched but decided to wait and focus on the Marans and Araucanas....I'm primarily keeping the pretty or productive egg layers and my disabled or friendly pets. Everyone else is going/gone. I'm down to 72 birds, many of them juvenile birds except my Adult Cuckoo Marans and my 3 silkies...the other egg layers are other pure or mix pets.

I sell my Mix and Marans eggs for eating...they're so pretty! Funny, I take money for my Marans eggs if I sell them for eating, but I dont charge for them if people on BYC want them? Just shipping. It's a chicken thing.

Oh...I got my first little blue/green egg yesterday!! I know, not a Marans, but I was tickled...I thought the Marans freeloaders would never start...these EE's had me worried too! But some little darling out there is doing her job!

Three of yesterdays eggs:
