I don't know-hee. I just think his little leg is cute.
I've only raised one clutch, but the Roos were larger looking and developing differently from the pullets by about the second week. They didn't have the copper color on their heads, but their combs were prominent and my pullets had no combs at all.
I've have noticed from looking at pictures on all the Marans sites that the way the chicks develop seems to be somewhat specific to the bloodlines and stock. They all look the same in the end, but they develop differently and it seems like there are characteristics to they way different lines develop. Seems to me anyway.
I agree. I have a little guy that is only about three weeks old and he is already getting a pink comb AND GROWING WATTLES!!!! What the???? I expect him to start crowing in a couple weeks at this rate! I will have to get a pic when I have time, just so you don't think I'm telling stories.
You can tell very early with these guys can't you, they develop their combs and wattles so fast.
I have 6 black copper maran roos and you could tell at a month what they were.
I know someone asked about the copper color. Mine are all 4 months old now but they had their copper coloring early. They had their first glints of copper at a couple of weeks old and at 4 months they have the copper saddle feathers, some in the breast and the head and neck.
The pullets are darker, less copper but they have it down their necks and they showed their coloring as young as the roos too.
These are one of my cuckoo's eggs from today and yesterday her eggs have gotten allot better even with the flash washing them out they are terra cotta for sure
I cannot wait till my two BC pullets lay and my Wellie pullet to
The good cuckoo hen who layed the egg above had laid four more that exact shade
The other hens color is just starting to even our but its a bit lighter but with dark speckles she is going to her now home tomorrow though to make room for Ameraucana pullets and maybe one more Marans cull pullet.
