Belinda,

Those are great pixs...have never thought to try doing that. Those are some big honkin' feet...lol

Glad to hear you have not had any more losses...Marans seem to be more "challenging" to hatch. Hope you have good luck with any others you have hatching.

Can't see from the pix...is your little one feather legged?

Yup, they're all feathered. No surprise, since all the parents are.

I hope the hens pick up laying again soon. I have gathered a mere handful of eggs in the last two days! I thought spring was supposed to be a productive time! I have one hardcore broody among the Marans, and I have her setting half a dozen turkey eggs.

I have a couple dozen marans eggs in the bators, and a half dozen broodies scattered around with secret stashes of eggs under them as backup just in case I have another incubator operator failure scenario. If these all hatch, I'm in big trouble!!! I really am looking to grow out some nice roos, not so much looking to build my hen flock, but I might have to build a "Flock B" or something like that... Could you imagine, a big ol flock of twenty or thirty Nice laying Copper Black Marans hens? Heck, then I might actually be able to choose a select group with just the right coppering, no white tips on thier feet feathers, just the perfect comb shapes, and of course, dark eggs! I am seriously selecting AWAY from slow feathering gene, that being my #1 culling point, at just a week old, all the no-tailers get sent down the road. That is on my copper blacks. I have not started "working" on my BBS other than trying to get more Blues and Splashes at this point. The blacks breed like rats, the blues and splashes, not so much.

My RIR lay an egg a day. I have not yet had the luck of having a broody, so used to the Hova...hehehe.
All of my Marans are way too young to lay yet. Next weekend I will have some BBS and BC Marans from onthespot that are due to hatch...so hope they do well. I can already predict this week will seems like a month long...LOL

Sounds like you are on your way to having enough BC's to cull ruthlessly and make progress to what you are wanting in your birds. That is wonderful!

I agree that it seems with BBS the blacks do breed like bunnies...I got some BBS eggs from someone in Iowa and ended up with a majority of blacks, just a few blues and no splashes at all.

I am kinda of liking the golden cuckoo coloring...will have to wait till I get more mature birds to really be sure. So many "flavors" to choose from, how do you pick just 1 or 2???

Hey lostsoul was that lady Iowa Amy Buboltz or something like that by chance?
I have 7 hatchlings from her. Maybe 2 have feathered legs. I guess I am having to settle with both feathered and non feathered birds.
LOLOL
