I finally have Marans to share. These are blue and black Copper Marans that I hatched from Merrydancer. I have more of her eggs ready to hatch this week. I think this one might be a blue.

These chicks are from Ray Valentine. I just got them this week.

My Black Copper girl laid her first egg this week!!

The first one wasn't very dark, but the 2nd was MUCH darker...I'm hoping that trend continues!!

Question for all of you marans specialists, please. I have 4 Black Copper Marans pipped, 2 last night and 2 this morning (4 of 4- whoopee!). But noticed that the two that pipped last evening had made no further progress by this a.m. (12 hrs). Each has broken through the shell and liner, and is accessing outside air. The bator temp is steady, and humidity is around 70%.
I have heard that sometimes marans need assistance in hatching due to shell thickness/outside coating. Today is day 12, and I've left them 'alone' to hatch today. Any advice if they have not progressed by this evening?

On both of my hatches with bc's I had to help them out I used tweezers and picked away the shell...Be careful not to tear they membrain on the inside skin...until it has dried...On my first hatch all that piped didnt make it out...I think marans are hard to hatch compaired to my silkies...Thats probably why there worth sooo much!!
