Sorry, but I don't consider misreporting the numbers of birds or breeders represented at the show to be anything resembling "truth". OTOH, I do consider the President and Vice President of the APA to be reliable and knowledgeable witnesses.

Also -- threads get closed or moderated for trolling and/or flaming, not for how well or poorly they conform to my desires. I am not a moderator here on BYC, so I have no power to make those decisions.

I suggest you folks consider the title of this, now very long, thread. Marans Thread for Posting Pics of Your Eggs, Chicks and Chickens. I just hate when threads are taken off the path and become fist fights when all the OP asked for was for pictures of birds and eggs. So, please, cut out the bickering and get back to what the original intent of the thread was. Fair warning that if it continues, about 350 pages will be locked up tight.

Speckled Hen is right. If some of you are looking to get this thread closed or worse forbidden from posting in the Breeds sections, keep it up.

And feel free to edit your posts to remove the crap.

Marans Chicken Club USA. We (I'm a Vice President of the club) are the ones working to gain APA approval for Marans.

Well I feel honored that you would take time to answer my post. You are one busy person. Thank you, and also for all your efforts in helping BCMs become APA approved.

Yes you do, (and I am NOT sucking up) Unless a person walks in your shoes there is no way possible to know the time, effort, thought, concern, problem solving...that your job entails. And that list must me very very long.
Again, thank you for doing this for all of us Marans lovers.

You said you have gotten "wrong colors". Do you know what variety or varieties the parents of the eggs were? Where did the eggs come from?

ETA: and do you have pics of the chicks and/or parents?

May I join the Marans thread? I have pictures. LOL
Well, I do have a question or two. Please don't laugh, I'm learning. To establish your first flock, is it acceptable or recommended to use Marans from different lines. It seems that I read somewhere that one should stick to only one line. Either way, can you tell me the reasoning behind the answer. Thanks.
I received a dozen Marans about 7 weeks ago. I was told they are Splash, Blue, and Black Copper. Some have obvious leg feathering, some have none. These are suppose to be from the Bev Davis lines, and Wade Jeanne lines, via Bishops Chickens.

The answer is -- it depends.

When you mix birds from different lines, you can't be sure what the offspring from the cross will be like. The two different sets of genes may mix together in a good way, or a not-so-good way. At the very least, you are likely to see an increase in variation for a couple of generations. OTOH, if you do mix birds from different lines, you are also increasing the genetic diversity -- and something wonderful might come out of it. It is likely to take some work to get your own new line standardized from the mixed birds, but at the end of it you'll have your very own line to be proud of.

So -- it depends. Are you up for the work of creating something new? Then go ahead and mix the lines. Or do you want to stick with tried and true? Then get all your birds from one line. You have to answer those questions for yourself.
