I don't believe it is a fault to have the black tuffs, but if a rooster (at maturity) has black ear tuffs, solid black breast and doesn't have solid red shoulders (has patches of black mixed in with the red) supposedly the rooster might throw more black hackled hens. But, when they are young, their ear tuffs are usually black. Mine all slowly lightened up some as they got older.

Thank you, I didn't know that. Another thing I wondered about was if the color of the tuffs made a difference too. Will a Roo who has really red tuffs throw nicer future hackles on a pullet than the ones who have a deeper red. I have a couple who are brownish red.

I always jump off subject, but...

after trying a higher protein diet over my layer feed I have noticed that my eggs have gotten a bit darker again. I think there is some truth to the higher protein helping to keep the color more true. Anyway mine jumped back up to a 5 on the chart and before some were a 4 or less after starting out a 5 when they first started laying.

I just went back to starter feed and added calcium and a little bit of layer and mixed it all together. Thought I would let you all know.

eggies are in the bator. Just learning about Marans and want to do it right they are beautiful birds. I have 3 different lines at the present in this flock. I'm no expert just needed a fun project. Will learn by trial and error.

You can vary the shell color quite a bit with various feeds not only the protien level but the feed base itself.
