ive hatched only a few marans (wheatens) useing LG incubator fallowing the instructions on water in the bottem of tray ,it has a fan and egg turner. on shipen eggs i got 5 out of 13 eggs but a nice guy from back woods poultry has a link to "dry hatch" that is intresting reading .... i figure 35 to 40 % hatch rate is good on shiped eggs . but luckily
i have 3 hens and 2 roos getting close to laying eggs .... anyway hear is the site

I had read that and initially kept humidity the normal/suggested levels and had really poor hatch rates. Plus, I have eggs of all types in the bator at the same time and it's only the BCMs that have difficulty hatching. My little Americauna and EEs and Polish are small and zip right out of their shell, no problem. The Barred Rocks and Rhode Island Reds and various barnyard mixes - all hatch no problem. All eggs are in incubator at same time. Only the BCM eggs have a problem. So I started putting BCM eggs in alone so that I could bump the humidity way up and I've had much better hatch rates with less helping on my part.

I dunno....just my personal experience.

I agree on this. The humidity in the past has been way too high in my incubator and I am afraid I have even drowned some chicks in the shell. My last hatches I kept it between 30 and 35 % until day 18, increased it for the rest of the time to 60 max.65% and Voila, I had a 90 % hatch rate on shipped eggs from the East Coast to the West Coast. I was very impressed.

Thanks to Patty (onthespot) I have a lovely bunch of BC Marans, and hope to have more in the Spring.

One of my girls... I have 3 girls and two boys, though the boys are from someone local.

Romeo and his girls. He doesn't have a lot of color on him, but I like his form. My other one is VERY colorful, and missing his tail feathers at the moment (

darn hens!!) as you can see from the first photo.

Here are the first 6 eggs that were laid... I'm quite pleased with the color.

These are pretty true to color, as the table is a light blue and the carton is white.

I have one egg customer that loves all the different colors... we were both happy with this day's worth of eggs.

The three darkest eggs are the marans... they don't always come out really dark... every once in a while the "ink" doesn't flow. (These are a little washed out by the flash.)

This is "Slick", my black marans.

They all have such neat personalities... I love my Marans!

I'm proud to have helped you get a start. I know how hard you have struggled with shipped eggs to AK for some reason. You sure got enough for a great start there. I really like the pullet in the first pic, the one with a lot of copper on her neck. She looks SQ to me, but what do I know. I never showed a chicken in my life. Thanks for posting!

Can't help myself....must show you this weeks eggs!!!!! They are so pretty..I hate parting with them. DH says I can't possibly keep every one of them for myself

Couple of people I know would like to purchase these eggs from me....problem is.....I can't figure out a price. One person wants them just for her gourmet cooking classes and the other person wants them for hatching.
Help me out here, any suggestions are helpful.

Eating eggs, on the other hand ??? I guess for gourmet eggs, that price is about right too?
