Can't get the blasted humidity up past 40%. Added 2 wet rags, a sponge and an extra water tray for more water surface area. Can't figure out why I can't get it to raise.
Couldn't have anything to do with it being 8 degrees outside and very dry could it? It's so cold we have to have the forced air going with the woodstove to keep the house around 62 degrees. I have two roasting pans and my biggest stock pot full of water on the woodstove to add humidity into the air in the house.
I normally don't raise the humidity levels above 40% but I was going to give raising it a try for this batch of Marans to see if it really made a difference in the hatch rate with them.
Any suggestions?
I know I should have probably posted this in incubating but it is regarding Marans so I hope you all will let it slide

Make sure its sealed well. If you have any of the ports open you will be letting out the humidity. I use part of an old wash cloth draped over and into one of the water trays, it wicks out the water.

I have 3 hygrometers and all have new batteries and all are with in one degree of each other.
I do have one of the rags draped in one of the trays for wicking effect. I've checked all ports and openings and lid to be sure I am not losing any heat or humidity, everything is tight.

Are you incubating or on lockdown? And what incubator do you have again? It was 1 degree here when I was on lockdown and we have a woodstove too. Low humidity state.

I always add warm water and I have a huge sponge from walmart in there that I cut in half and placed into two microwave trays. I also have the plug in at lockdown.

You do have a small opening somewhere though, right? You have to give air exchange. You probably know that and you didn't mean it was air tight, but I wanted to be sure.

i am using my homemade bator and my lg but it is my homemade bator that i cant get humidity up in. have used it several times and it holds well at 40%. i was just going to try higher hum. yes it has ventilation holes

Ok, all of you Marans experts and those that don't claim to be, LOL here is what I am hoping to be a Good dare I say great Roo. Hatched from a 7 or 8 depending on the person looking. This cockeral is supposed to be from Wade jeane C-1 birds from a friend here in Texas. I don't have a Black Copper roo as of now so im also looking for one old enough to take care of the hens. what do you think?
