Thank you Byrdj. It's actually ok with me that the pullets have less color. I have some roosters that need improvement. Confirmation is right and and egg color is very good, but the roosters have some minor color faults. I don't want to introduce anything too different so, I am working with what I've got. I am also just a hobbyist, so I don't hatch and cull lots of birds.

I don't think I'll try right now. Maybe in Spring. I'd love to find a mature Wheaten hen or two, but I think that's a fantasy!

I wish I could help you evaluate your boys. They're all pretty, but I haven't been into Marans that long and I'm afraid I'd give someone wrong advise. The one thing I can tell you that I'm sure of, is don't write them off too soon. They can really change as they reach maturity, and even past a year old sometimes. I like the first boy, even though someone mentioned he didn't have enough color. Give him more time and he might impress you. He has a better tail angle than the others, and a nice breast.

everyone that I know that has gotten hatchery marans was sorely disappointed in the egg color. The ones that have posted only had tan eggs, maybe a three on the scale. I don't think feathered legs is worth trading off good egg color for. Good egg color is elusive, and feathered legs is dominant. If you have feather legged hens that lay dark, just breed your own feather legged roos from the stock you have, if your roo is from proven dark laying lines. You will be WAY ahead $ wise if you do that. That ten dollar bargain roo will cost you hundreds and hundreds of dollars of wasted feed and lost hours of work caring for birds that will likely grow up and lay eggs no darker than a RIR. Wish I could tell you something more encouraging.

My thoughts exactly about the eyes and unfortunately he only has very VERY sparse feathers...like 2 stubs on one leg and 1 stub on the other but that does not worry my though...it's way too easy to breed back in.

Can't comment much on #2 because I'm not that familier with Splash Marans.

Understood and thanks.

I wouldn't worry about the copper color in the breast of #3. The French standard allows for some flecks of copper in their breast. But it looks like he has no shank feathering.

He has only a few specks of copper in his breast, that doesn't bother me and the only reason he is on the list is because of NO feathering. I only entertain thoughts of keeping him as a possible 3rd spare but only if absolutely need be. He has a great disposition though.

From what I can see in #4, he would be one of my least favorite. He has too much straw or gold in his neck.

I agree and he is by far my least favorite. Thanks for all your opinions! ~Pink

I had promised myself that there would be no winter hatches this year. No more chicks in the basement! Look what's happening. So much for willpower.
