Well I'm not an expert on marans but I know a thing or two about genetics and the genetics don't change just because the egg lightens up. I would pick the birds that lay the darkest eggs consistently no matter where they are in their "laying cycle". Cold weather and foraging can't affect their genetics.

Yep, and I think the reason why everyone says "I just select the darkest eggs in any given week" is because they have lots of hens and they don't know who is laying which eggs. So, they simply choose the darkest ones.

That's what I do. Plus then I don't have to keep track of what hatched out of a lighter egg. there are none. If they hatched, they hatched from a dark egg. period. Makes it simple to keep track of egg color genetics.

I know this is a BIG taboo here but does anyone get dark chocolate eggs from the cuckoos from a hatchery and if so which hatchery would you recommend? I apologize in advance for all those that I have offended by this question.

I am looking into buying some eggs from a breeder and hatch out...but those DAG ideal-poultry cuckoo pullets keep tempting me!

I have a Cuckoo Marans, that I believe is hatchery stock. I'm not 100% sure, as she was given to me. She just finished molting, and looks so good (to my untrained eye). Now, i don't mean SOP good!

She lays an egg every day .... or I should say, she DID lay an egg every day (until molt). I would say it is probably a 4. She has not resumed laying, since molting.
