my three cuckoo marans are 21 weeks old and their faces just went CRIMSON in the last week. i can't wait!~it's sooooo hard when you have never had a dark brown egg before. hope i am swimming in eggs soon too! they are my only pullets about to lay, and everyone else is 1.5-3 years old, so slowing down a bit on average. i'll have a bunch coming of age in october, (FCBMs, olive eggers, javas, EEs)but this is the most exciting thing until then.

Thanks so much!

Okay, folks - I've posted on this before, but no one seemed to know anything about it. I thought it was just a fluke in that particular hen, and I ended up selling her. Now, I have ANOTHER hen, also Marans, that lays, every now and then, an egg with these odd holes in the shell. I can't find anything online about this, and in the bazillions of hens I've owned, I've only had two that lays them - both are Marans. That's just too much of a coincidence for it be...a coincidence. To further muddy the situation, both of the girls are from completely different bloodlines! So, I have to think it's something with the breed. Anyone else ever have one of these? This is one I got yesterday with TWO holes in it - a first. This hen lays these eggs maybe 1 out of every 30 eggs she lays, and she's a cull from my breeder pen to my layer pen:

Here is each hole close up - you can see where it almost looks like one of those eggs with extra calcium deposits on the shell, but it was for some reason pushed in (?) The membrane beneath the shell is intact in both holes (as it always is):

Anyone else ever have one of these? This just perplexes me. All my layers get the same feed and treats, and all are on Avia Charge 2000, so they should have all the vits/mins they need. Weird stuff!

I have a girl, also a Marans, that lays one with a hole like that every so often. I haven't gotten one in over 2 weeks. I thought it was just me but now I see I have company.

I never took pics of it, it always went in the frying pan to quick!
