Stamp - yuppers, that's a super good indicator that they'll be laying soon. Problem is, they can go crimson & lay the following week, OR....it can take another 4-6 weeks!
Hi guys, so I had a nearly 50/50 split decision on the Breed/Gender page regarding one of my Wheaten Marans chick on whether its male or female. I'm supposed to have a fella coming to pick up my roosters from this batch this weekend, so I'm in desperate need of some confirmation. I had thought that more significant black feathering in the wings meant male, more carmel colored meant female, but please correct me if I'm wrong.
So here's one of her hatchmates I'm nearly certain is a rooster for reference...
And this is the girl (hopefully!!!) in question...
Why yagotta go make fun of my girl's gams like that, Wynette?
Goodness, I hope she's a lady. If not, that would mean 4 boys, 1 girl from a hatch of 5, ekkk!
Side note: Wynette, your little olive eggers are growing like weeds and are THE most precious things. Even with very little handling by me (Lucy was a ferocious mom, but she's now gone back to single life) they are so sweet and incredibly friendly, so docile and love to be cuddled! Completely unlike my Marans chicks, who hatched out just a week or so earlier, also raised by a broody, but run from me like I'm the absolute devil. The little OE's have completely merged with the flock with no problems and I was shocked to find them roosting with the big girls last night, three of them happily tucked under one of my BR's wing. SO CUTE!! Anyways, I'll get some pictures up very soon!
coloration looks kinda off on boath"sex" to me but im no expert , but dont look like any marans wheaten color to me but i could be way of base and i dont want to sound likea know it all.... ive only hatched and raised around 80 to 100 . i am a better carpenter than chicken pro

mine do the same from time to time and its normal to me every once in a wile the egg gets stuck in the sprayer and it sprays a hole then fills in with the color grout lol ...
i guess
Newbie question here. My sister gave me two chicks that she bought from the Atwood's straight run bin. A wonderful person on this forum helped me identify them as Cuckoo Marans. Since then I have been nosing around this thread a bit and I have a question. Most of the pics posted on this thread are for a variety that is very different than mine. What do you call the variety that I have and why do they seem to be a less popular variety?
You have a very handsome Cuckoo rooster! I don't think that Cuckoo's are less popular, many people only have cuckoo's and that is all they breed. I personally don't breed them because I am not a fan of barred birds unless they are blue. I have seen some stunning cuckoo birds that lay lovely eggs but I personally appreciate the Black Copper and Blue Copper varieties because of their ability to lay the darkest of the Marans eggs and I am in love with their colors and personalities.
