Marans Thread for Posting Pics of Your Eggs, Chicks and Chickens

Now about Cuckoo Marans Eggs:

I dont have anybody earmarked for my next batch of Cuckoo Marans eggs, noone to ship them to at all, so since I just ordered a huge bunch of Araucana eggs, and I have to fire up the incubator anyhow (depsite fall coming, and winter being on the way?), I guess I'm going to have to put a few little Cuckoo Marans eggs of my own in the incubator! Wow, who would have thought?

After these go in the bator though, I'll have the next ones laid up for grabs! Or sell them for food. How sad. They are laying really slow now though, so they could probably use the break.....

I am so happy to hear some of the ones I sent out are doing okay, I just heard that 5 are developing in one state, how cool is that!

Okay can someone help me out with a couple of questions?
I have cuckoos and I remember the males having yellow throats and bellies as chicks, (or maybe it was a coincidence) but I marked them and thats what they turned out to be.

The black coppers, are they the same way? Is there a way to tell the difference between the males and females as chicks?
I have a bunch of babies.
I definitely see the same thing in the way of some having mostly black throats and bellies and the others having completely yellow.
Some are big roly poly little things. I can't believe how fat a chick can be.
I have also heard that the roos may have a larger pointier head than the females.
Also, some of mine have black faces and some have yellow mottled markings on their face.
Some have more copper on their heads and face as well, which made me think girls.

Any opinions marans experts?

Hmmm. Your reference to yellow is puzzling me a little. They should be black and white. Do you mean white? The picture to the left under my name is of two BC chicks at about a week and a half that were hatched in July. The one on the left was really pretty much all black with copper highlights on her wing tips and the one on the right was black with a white bib in front and copper highlights on his wing tips. They all have white fuzzy-butts. Most of them are black with the white bibs but some are almost all black. With regard to sexing them, I am not sure if mine were an exception or not but they were easy to sex by about 1 1/2 to 2 weeks because the boys had very prominent combs and tiny little waddles starting to develop. It was really obvious.
Some of mine had white markings on their faces and some did not. The white will all go away as they start to develop. The cockerels should display a lot more of the copper color than the pullets and the copper should come in on the cockerels earlier than the pullets. They will end up with color on their hackles and saddle area and shoulders. The pullets will only have color on the hackles. Some pullets will have a lot of color ( I have one who does) but my other two are almost all black with just a little copper starting to come in behind their heads.

Some of them have the bibs right under their chins and then others have it going all the way down the belly, most are the white but some have almost a yellow tint to theirs, its actually the same three that have it going all the way down their bellies
Some of mine have copper on their faces, around the top of the head and over the eyes, one or two have some copper tint on their cheeks.
They are all slightly different, but sooooo adorable!

I was remembering when my little guy was 10 weeks old, I havent posted this pic of him yet - He's much more handsome now, but still a gawky teen!

Also, Do you think that our teens are going to wait for Spring to lay their first egg, or could it happen during the Winter? The rest of my adult hens have always slowed down, but I still got eggs before.....I've just never had to wait for such young girls.

Wow, I've had chickens of one sort or another for over twelve years and never paid attention to their laying cycles half as much as I do these newest ones (eating eggs vs breeding eggs)

I love this thread, and all of the help and support you guys give...It motivates me to look things up, peaks my interest all the time...I especially love the Marans, and I cant wait til my name comes up on Bev Davis's list for her eggs!

I wasnt going to hatch any more this year, but I just bought a box of true Araucana eggs, ahhh, why not, they're on my wish list, so I'll keep busy with them while I wait!

I gotta figure out how to post some pics.
I have some new baby black copper marans and they are so cute.
One of them is big and round and has alot of red on his/her face, the top of the head and the wing tips.
It has alot more red than any of the others.
Actually this one is the first to get some feathers too.
They are all the same age but this one is maturing a little faster I guess.
But what a good looking chick!

I dont know if this Q is somewhere in this tread but is it normal for a Marans lay a nice dark egg then a cream colored egg the next day?
