Marans Vs Buckeyes

Having raised both, I prefer Buckeyes. They lay better, better foragers, dress out exceptionally and lay at a younger age. I also live in the north so I don't have to worry about frostbite with the hardy buckeyes.

We love our Buckeyes! I did a lot of research looking for a hardy chicken that would be a good dual purpose breed. They are known to be great foragers and even mousers. And I love that by using Buckeyes to build our flock we are increasing the numbers of a rare breed. There's a very active American Buckeye club too.

The only thing that I can say has already been said. Very doscile birds that are curious and aware of their surroundings yet cautious about being handled. But if you handle them regularly, they are like puddy in your hands. Very friendly and they thrive just about anywhere. Buckeye. Proper Marans have feathered legs/feet. Messy in a wet climate especially if yarded , instead of free ranged.

GO BUCKEYES!! whoop. I am also in the pacific northwest and have buckeyes for last 5 years. I also have had marans but they ending up in the freezer (what's that tell ya). Buckeyes are truly a great heritage homestead type chicken, And with winters like ours, I never have to worry about them.

I have had Marans in the past and breed Buckeyes now. No question in my mind Buckeyes are the better bird for your needs, especially with regards to the frostbite issue and the single combs the Marans have.

When a cock bird gets frostbite on his comb it inhibits his ability/desire to breed as well as his fertility, so that reduces his effectiveness as a breeder. Buckeye males, with their pea combs, don't have that issue.

As well, I have found Buckeyes to be far superior in terms of their ability to range for food, and to get along well with each other (males.) Marans are not as easy-going in terms of temperament. Buckeyes are just the best all-around homestead bird there is, in my opinion.

If you're planning on using them as truly dual purpose the Buckeye will be better of the two since it is faster growing so cockerels will reach butcher weight faster. I will say as someone who has raised poultry in the Pacific Northwest for 20 years...you don't need to worry about "cold hardy" unless you're way up in the cascades. Chickens are tougher than many give them credit for.
