Solid Blue Marans are not recognised in any country in the World, the only Blue variant recognised is the Blue Brown-Red ( Blue Copper) that is recognised in Belgium.
The British have never had any blue Marans variants, and there is no record or claim of any French Blue Marans being imported from France ,either direct or via Canada.
Draw your own conclusions as to how there are so many blue Marans variants in the US.

The French themselves say that the blue gene has been present in the breed since its inception.

"The blue color variety seems to have been existing in the Marans since its origins, i.e since the first crossing with its english ruff ancestors."

There's no telling whether blues in the US came from that original blood, or not -- but I don't see any reason to assume that it was a result of cross breeding. OTOH, most likely there are so *many* blues and patterned blues in the US because folks here are blue-crazy and therefore breed a lot of them.

Since all you need to produce blue marans is the blue gene, and blue coppers are recognised, then blue marans can be created without having to go outside of the marans breed correct? Couldn't you breed a blue copper to a solid black to introduce the blue gene, then eventually eliminate blue looking E/ER birds and get true E/E blues after several generations of proper breeding?

A couple of minor issues. Yes I agree that Blue has been floating around in Marans in Europe since the 1100s, but to say the Blue gene in US Marans has come from imported stock needs a bit of clarification. As I said nobody is claiming that Blue Coppers or any blue variant was imported from Europe. I can only find records of English Cuckoos & French Black Coppers. Maybe someone will put their hand up? Blue is also a dominant gene, if it's there you can see it. It would appear either as Blue or Splash.

Nobody said that the blue gene DID come from imported stock -- just that it *could* have, and we have no record that it didn't.

Since when do we have itemized receipts for every legal and illegal Marans importation over the last 50 years or so?

I personally own wheatens that are *purported* to have descended from birds that were imported about 5 years ago. I have no proof one way or the other, but it seems reasonable to accept that various unrecorded importations have occurred over the years. And as for the blue gene being "dominant" (I know you meant incomplete dominant), I can easily imagine blue wheatens (especially hens) or blue cuckoos blending into a flock with little notice.

I'm not saying that things DID happen this way -- just that it's a reasonable conjecture.
