browsing the forum i've seen lots of posts, well brooder posts, that have a random assortment of marbles in the brooder with chicks.

do the marbles heat up under the lamp and help to keep the babies warm?

or do some chicks like to play with them. . . haha, that'd be funny. ( :

anyways. just wondering.

jeremy.

Marbles are put in the water dish to keep chicks from drowning in it. Other than that, I don't know what they would be used for.

oh! i guess that makes sense.

i didn't know babies were so prone to drowing? our water dish that they drink from is only about 1 in. deep.

From what I have observed itty bitties tend to fall asleep where ever they happen to be (like the food/water dish!). That and they aren't exactly the most coordinated!

I added marbles to their waterer to attract them to it when they were first in the brooder, worked like a charm. Now they're just in there to keep them from falling face first in there and drowning, although I think there's less of a chance of that now.

Even a human baby/toddler can drown in 1" of water. The marbles work very well, and I've not lost a chick due to drowning since I've used them.
