March 2023 hatch-a-long

Pics
Any hatching buddies here have eggs due on 3/17?
Me too! I…actually have hatch dates for 3/7, 3/11, 3/13, 3/15, and 3/17…because I’m absolutely unhinged and I keep setting the biggest eggs my pullets are laying every couple days. To “check fertility” you know…🙈

I plan on selling most of the mixed breed pullets at 5-6 weeks, when I can tell them apart, and keeping the roos for meat. I theoretically should only be adding the colored layers to my main flock.

My Cemani eggs aren’t pointy but I am hatching Pavlovskaya eggs that are this way. Every single one is. I guess we will see how well they do but I checked with someone else I knew that had them and she confirmed that is typically the shape she gets. Maybe it just depends on the breed and the chick if they survive 🤷‍♀️
Most of my eggs are normal, but I’ve had some from one of my pullets that were pointy. I even almost didn’t set one, but it hatched first, and is the cutest little nugget🖤 I’ve had the biggest, perfect shaped eggs from hens that didn’t hatch, for reasons unknown to me. They sure are fun, though :)

Oh that they are!! Most of the eggs I get from my other chickens are considered normal. Then I got the Russians and every one of their egg is a little pointy. I had to do some research cause I wasn’t sure how well they would hatch but it seems to be normal. I can’t wait to see your AC babies. I’m hoping that more make it this time. Although now that my son can’t just walk into the room for the flashlight I should have a better outcome.

woohoo nice to have some hatching buddies!!!!!!!!!!

I will candle tomorrow and hopefully see SOMETHING going on! LOL
I’m gonna wait a couple days to candle mine. Though the Call ducks I have in already that will hatch the same day (or so) are doing fantastic! I’m so excited! I hope you can see something in your eggs tomorrow!

Marked my air cells after weighing the eggs. My notes must be off because from the day 0 to today's day eight weight I have one of the eggs as having lost 20% (all the rest are 5-6%). The air cell doesn't scream problems to my untrained eye though. The white egg in center.

I've got one like that, but the air cell is huge. It's Day 16 and that egg has lost about 28% weight. I'll candle tonight and see if it's still viable. Very strange.

I got eggs one carton from the grocery store, (from a local farm) eggs to the left. The green ones. They cost $6.99 dz. I have hatched them before, and they had pretty silver hens that lay blue eggs. I wasn't crazy of the air cells, but will set anyhow, the blue one to the far upper left, has a rough bumpy shell, and I am not crazy about it but it is going in also.

Eggs to the right are from the health food store ($8.40 dz), and I have also hatched their eggs before. They have good egg cells, but the eggs were probably washed. The gray egg to the front was from my hens, they have been off roosters for a month, but hopefully it is fertile still.

Pretty eggs! The grey eggs are so neat. Hopefully it hatches for you!
