First time hatcher! I have 5 silkie eggs that should be making their debut on March 4th. Usually I just get chicks to add to my flock but decided to try incubating eggs this time. I find myself staring into the incubator multiple times a day. Can't wait to see

Same here, and these will be our first chicks/chickens. Excited to see what kind of success we get from the eggs we set, it's been very interesting to watch them progress.

warning.......... It gets even worse once you hear peeping in there ...... then again once you see a pip!!!! LOL It is so exciting though!!!!!!

So we candled last night (day 4). I really wanted to get my 4 extras out, so we "rated" the non developing eggs and removed the 4 that we were most confident about. Now I have the standard 22 in my NR360. I have 12/26 that are definitely developing. 2/26 are probably developing. 5/26 may or may not be developing (couldn't decide). 7/26 don’t seem to be developing, but I don't see any harm in hanging on to them until the next round of candling.

One thing that surprised me - that I can't recall happening the last time we candled eggs - was that some of my eggs which appear very normal shell, turned out to be extremely... splotchy? when candled. Is this normal? The pictures don't do it justice, but one example is my wyandotte's egg. Mostly solid on the outside w/ slight freckles, but when candled it was so spotted and dark that we struggled to make out what was happening inside. We had several eggs from several different hens (different breeds) that had eggs that looked like this. But other eggs from the same hen were totally normal (or solid colored) looking.

I am pleased to say that my favorite hen has at least 2 strongly developing eggs!!! Her and my roo didn't get along, and when I've cracked her eggs in the past they did not have the bullseye. But a couple days before our roo went to his new coop, I noticed she had some feathers out of place and wondered if he'd finally conquered her. I kept every egg she laid for 2 weeks before incubation started. Her earlier eggs don't appear to be developing, but her later eggs, those laid 10-14 days after the roo left, are.

- 10 with signs of development
- 2 look clear
Of course the two that look clear are Ameraucana and EE. I want….no NEED colourful egg layers!

Yay! I hatched my first chicks/chickens last month. Such an exciting thing to watch happen. It’s definitely addicting though I needed to set more asap haha

Day 5 candling last night. 38/39 look great, the odd one out had a hairline crack I didn’t notice before so I removed it. It looked like it wasn’t developing anyway.

I told my husband it’s like Christmas, he was like…not really. The chickens are not his thing.

The larger hatches seem to drag out so I admit I’m tired of running over there by the time it’s all finished.

Lol your husband sounds like my husband.... And my girls actually. They like the chicks for the first week or two but that is it.
