March 2023 hatch-a-long

2 days before lockdown and 5 days before my husband divorces me….er I mean hatch day for 10 more chicks!
I’m so nervous and excited and less prepared for these ones to hatch. I think I’m going to take Monday off from work since day 21 is Sunday at 7:30.
I know, I need to get my room brooder and shop brooder ready, it will be here before you know it! :celebrate

Okay, spoke with guy I got my eggs from and he does in fact have 1 Cemani hen and roo, so I got lucky on that one. Heres the whole list of what he has (free range) so should make for some interesting detective work..

Hens:
Ayam cemani (ivory egg)
Light brahma (light tan egg)
Easter egger (blue or green egg)
Faverolle (tan eggs)
Bl & Blu Australorp (tan eggs)
Black minorca (white egg)
Barnevelder (med brown egg)
Wh & Br Leghorn (white eggs)
Buff orpington (tan egg)
Silver laced wyandotte (tan egg)
Bl Maran (dark brown egg)
Golden laced polish (light tan eg)
Speckled sussex (tan egg)
Welsummer (med brown w speckles egg)
Opal legbar (blue egg, smaller than easter egger eggs)

Roosters:
Cuckoo Maran
Ayam cemani
Golden Laced polish
Opal Legbar
Buff/Red-leakage Silkie
Silver laced Sebright bantam
That's a really great mix, and so nice of them to list it all out for you so you can try to track what's what (as in down to the size of the COL egg being smaller). I kept a shard of my eggs and took a picture of each chick with it to try to match chick/egg to adult/egg. (Of course I only had 6 in the hatch.) The roo being a white egg layer has toned down the color of this generation's eggs.

Hope you end up with some phenomenal chickens!

I do have a picture of all the eggs before they were set, and numbered them. The eggs were separated in groups of 2 with cardboard dividers so I know exactly which chick came from what egg. The chicks ended up being larger than I anticipated though and one managed to jump the divider, but I was able to figure out which one it was.

What is this one? It’s so cute!

Cute! What breed is the one closest to the feeder?

Backyard mutts essentially, see my previous post (quoted below).

Meanwhile I am trying to solve an incubator puzzle… I went to pick up eggs to hatch for a customer yesterday and they had said there would 120 but there were actually 160! I got out my brinsea which is supposed to hold 14 eggs and the nr 360 that holds 22 and moved sone of my Eggs in there to make space. But they are double stacked. On top of that I had ordered shipped eggs which she sent out yesterday. I thought it would be 12 and they would go in the brinsea but she just told me she actually sent 18! Which is awesome… but I either need to figure out a turner for the hatch shelf in my Dickey’s or maybe in my Hatcher after the ones in there finish. 😳
THAT is a lot of pressure! I’d crack like an…🤣🤣

I think we're done, I have seven eggs still in the incubator but no action. I'll pull them tomorrow.

Ended up with - five pure PP, three EE x PP, one Australorp x PP, seven OE x PP.

The EE crosses are a beautiful light silver color, with yellow chests. If what I was told about the OE cross is true, six are roosters 😳
They are beautiful! :love

thinking I had my thermometer in a warm spot in my incubator since it has been reading around 100 but I am struggling to get my humidity up to 65...... It has been around 58 and I can get it up to 63 maybe but then it drops back down. Both sides are full. Only way I can get it up is to close my vent even a tiny bit but I know air is extremely important so I don't want to do that..... UGH. I think the mat I am using this time is a tad bigger than the one I used to use (I cut a new one for this time) so thinking that is it? debating on trying to cut it while it is in there or at least a couple spots to see if that helps.......

I did move my thermometer to a different spot to check it there so waiting for it to level out since I had added warmed up water so it brought the humidity way up till it balances out.
