March 2023 hatch-a-long

That’s how I was last time - like Christmas! Then had a chick ICU running the whole weekend after for one chick that didn’t make it. Now with chicks 4 weeks inside I’m counting the days until they can be out. I was ‘cocky’ (lol) thinking it wouldn’t bother me a bit having them inside longer. I was wrong haha
that is why I made a brooder under my poop board in the coop. around 5-10 days old, whenever I get brave enough to put them out there with out being up all night worrying, they move on out there. :) I miss being able to easily see them anytime I want but I am ready for them to be out and they have normally outgrown my indoor brooder by then since it is much smaller than the first batch I did. I used a huge dog crate then but then got my dog so he now uses it. haahaa.

Ok My march hatch is done. 17 started developing, 15 made it to lockdown, 14 hatched (one late quitter and of course a blue egg......) 82% hatch rate isn't too shabby since a lot were shipped eggs. The shipped eggs were a 72.5% hatch rate. my eggs were 100%!

there are 4- black golden laced blue Brahma's, 3 Lavender Brahmas, 1 EE (those were all shipped) then 6 splash Cochin/project Cochins from my eggs (2 of those are from my girl that died 2 weeks ago)

Congratulations 🎉

It's now past day 21 and the last egg hasn't hatched :(

It's still in the incubator. Should I leave it in there? Should I try to assist hatch? I candled it and I can't really tell if it's alive or not. How do you know if its a late quitter?

If I can’t tell, I just let it be for an extra day. If by day 22 I don’t see an internal pip when candling or obvious movement, I turn the machine off and leave it be for a day or two. I cannot bring myself to throw them out or open them up until they are positively dead but I don’t normally egg-topsy anymore since it’s almost always a malposition issue that late in the game. I do not try to assist ones that never started pipping in the first place and I really try not to help the ones that did try unless I think it’s an incubator mistake on my part.

LOL My last one just hatched a bit after 11pm.... hoping it doesn't keep me up all night.

This is why the incubator is in the laundry room -- furthest point in the house from any of the bedrooms. ;)

I have been leaving them for 2-3 days just in case, but haven't had one hatch past the end of day 22.

Woke up with 11 total hatched, 1 zipping, and 1 pip that I’m able to see. Out of 31…I am hoping the action will continue into this evening at least. The temps must just have been slightly too low since we are at day 22 as of last night. I think. I always get messed up when counting but I set these three weeks ago Friday in the afternoon.

Lol. Mine is in my bedroom. My laundry room is in my unheated basement so figured too hard to keep temp up. And no other spot to put it. Had it in the kitchen last year nut don't have a ton of counter space and it took up a lot of it.
