March Egg Swap Addresses sent

I haven't heard from my swap partner yet nor from the post office...Hope I don't have eggs lost in the Bermuda Triangle!!!

OH Since we are all part of a big ol' swap-a-thon I have a question anyone have any serious problems with the PO yet?

I got eggs from someone else in yesterday (nothing to do with this swap) and my eggs that came yesterday had been opened AND tampered with along their route, some of the packaging materials had been removed from the box and one thing of eggs were toppled over on their side resulting in them being up against the side of the box with 2 broken eggs.

I am so mad, they didn't even try to retape the box and left it looking obviously opened, the PO are supposed to put a note on the box saying they've opened your package for whatever reason, and are not supposed to in any way result in damaging the contents of said package, so I am peeved. Calling around and seeing what I can do, but since they weren't insured I don't know if there is much to be done. Got to talk to my post master today, that is if shes back from her sick leave.

My new strategy is to mark the box " fragrance oils".. if they were to break them.. smelllllllllly.. maybe they will be more careful.. Plus.. close it with at least ONE piece of duct tape.. not easy to just "fall open"

Shelly this may cause you even more problems as I think they have to ship those by ground and your box might get hung up at the PO.

To be honest, I don't think it really matters what you write on the boxes. I used to work as a flight crew scheduler at the USPS hub/sort facility in Indianapolis. It would make you cringe to see what happens to the priority packages.

The building is about three stories high, all open in the center. At 1am, on the top level, the boxes/mail were unloaded by tired, unhappy, low paid "ramp rats" who took great delight in tossing and kicking boxes marked fragile. There was a conveyer belt that went from the top to the bottom. There was no order to how they ended up on the bottom. Giant, heavy boxes regularly crushed tiny, fragile boxes below them. It was a game for the workers to see if they could punt it onto the belt or if they could toss one all the way to the carts on the bottom. It was awful to hear the sound of breaking glass almost every night. I hated walking thru there, but our bathrooms were reached that way. I wouldn't have wanted most of these guys handling my trash, much less my precious belongings. This was 18 years ago, but I doubt it has changed if you go by what our packages still look like.

So anyway, the longwinded response was to say that I don't mark anything on the packages and just try to package well. I think it makes them less of a target.

Mrs. Mooncat~I believe that this is still true today and I used to ask that folks not write "Hatching Eggs" on the boxes just to minimize the chance that my box would become a target because having those words on them. However, I am now torn because my very sweet Postal Delivery lady brings my boxes to the door when they have HE's written on them instead of carrying them in her truck.

I used to be able to call the PO and ask them to hold my boxes but customer service has become so abysmal that they put down the phone (to go check and see if I have any boxes) and then wander back claiming I don't.....only to have my eggs show up later in the day.

I thought at first it was simply a mistake....but after four times I realized they just don't give a hoot about my eggs. lol

Anyway, I consider it a miracle to have any of my shipped eggs hatch and appreciate each and every one of them!

I am of the same mind. My delivery lady out here in the boonies is fantastic. She has called me and offered to bring chicks I ordered out to me when she saw them in the office. She told me to tell her when I am expecting something important and she will do her best. If only half of the USPS employees were this considerate, it would make an amazing change. I treasure her!

Eggs arrived!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Mary, 12 beautiful Icelandic eggs! I'm assuming the A & B indicates two separate pens? Also assuming the number is date collected? Would any of these eggs be from the infamous Drekki? Whether or not they are, could you post a picture of him. I've looked through other threads and wanted to show him to my DH.

Thanks Jim, 7 beautiful eggs have arrived. 5 Iowa Blues, 1 Langshan (the second was crushed in the mail) and a lovely blue egg. I need to go back to your post to see what to expect from the blue.

I am so excited for set day!

Mary, have your eggs arrived? USPS still has not updated their website and they still show as processed through Sacramento. I had them look them up in their computer while I was there this morning. The girl was vague and noncommittal, mumbling something about sometimes they miss scanning a box.

Renee, have your eggs arrived? Their website says they are at your PO. I don't know why USPS is so slow about updating their info. Both boxes should have arrived yesterday.

Thanks again!!!

Well, I'm off to cleanup a chick. A new baby this morning has membrane dried all over and can't stand up. I was greeted this morning by 8 German NH chicks!!!

My Pheasant that I just received on Wednesday was shipped guaranteed overnight, she arrived 15 hours after the "guaranteed" time. I called the hub near me and left a message on a voice mail customer service rep. last night. She returned my call this morning, is giving a FULL REFUND of my shipping charges, appx. $50! Our local hub in Albany and my PO in Voorheesville are terrific! I am so fortunate that as long as they can get here safely I know that the locals are decent. I am sorry for the shipping woes everyone has been having.

I just have all my egg boxes marked "call for pickup". My PO has my # taped to the wall. They have been wonderful to me.
