My quail are due to hatch on the 13th, so the end is near! I haven't had any stinkers yet (they are soooo hard to candle!) so I'm hopeful that I will have a good hatch. Some of the eggs were at least 2 weeks old when I set them, so here's hoping!!

Well, I will be joining in again for the April Hatch-a-long! Kandace AKA greenfamilyfarms, who I won/bought the BO eggs from via BYC auction, is most graciously sending me more eggs for the cost of shipping, since I had a poor hatch. What a sweetheart! Thanks, Kandace!

So, I'll try this other batch and not make the mistakes I made this time. The first time's always a learning experience; work out the kinks/bugs, so-to-say.

And to whet your appetites, here are a couple pics!

Here's a pic of them in their brooder!

Glad to hear we'll be hearing from you for the 'APRIL HATCH-A-LONG come join in'. I'll start that at the end of the 3rd week this month. Nice you got 2 chicks & have learned a few things for your next hatch. We've all been there, that's how we learn.

Look! Look! Look! Last year I attempted several hatches... with terrible results. I have a cute Cuckoo Silkie from last year's hatch. So anyway, I was determined to try again - and be successful - this year. I bought 2 batches of eggs off of Ebay. One came packed absolutely wonderful, but the post office must've been hard on them because the air cells were moving about in most of them. The other batch came packed pretty darn good, also. Anyway, out of the 10 eggs that I placed in lock down 2 days ago, I noticed 2 were pipped when I got home from work a few hours ago:

Anyway, about 20 minutes ago my daughter came screaming out of my bedroom (where the 'bator is located). Look what she found!

The other egg is "dancing" and chirping, so I am hoping that little girl will hatch soon, too! I am soooo happy!

I have another batch of eggs from a fellow BYC'er that are in the other 'bator. Almost every single is developing wonderfully, so I am so happy!!!!

Well it looks like I am going to just get 6 out of my hatch. I was incubating 19 eggs....what did I do wrong? the 6 look Great! but I don't see any more signs of the others, of the 6 hatched they got out of the shells fine, not defects or anything. I put them in the brooder Sunday p.m. and they immediately starting eating and drinking....so I don't get it. I know the eggs are fertile, I see the rooster on the hens, and they are all just over a year old.

However, As soon as I can get the incubator clean and ready, I will try it again, so look for me again Save the Favs.

Day 22 update (03/07 hatch date).
I finally gave up on the 4 remaining Ameraucanas that did not pipped. I cracked 1 out of curiosity and found out that it never developed (clear withe blood ring) the same with the other three. These were difficult to candle in the first place like the blue and black CM's. I have better success with the CM's 10 out of 10 100% hatch compared to 3 out of 7 Ameraucanas. Did 100% on my very own set of eggs from my flock as well 10/10 .

I have to help out two of my CM's hatch out. (one of them has given up pipping because of the awkward position inside the egg (its right foot is over his head almost touching its left ear). The last one to hatch was upside down in the carton egg tray I have as a setup for lockdown. It was more like perfect oval egg, the pointy end was difficult to identify. Anyway out of the 27 eggs I have at lockdown, 23 hatched.

Lockdown tonight for 17 barnie eggs, though I'm only positive 16 of them are still viable (out of the original 21). The questionable one is brown and I can't be absolutely sure, so I'm leaving it in "just in case." Once I got these moved to the hatcher, I put 6 EE and 2 barnie eggs in the incubator. I'm hoping my EE will throw some olive eggers since she's been mating with my RSL roo

42 eggs went into the bator today.. First time with the new bator and egg turner so I am interested in how it will go. All three of my roosters are rirs and also half of my hens.. I am thinking I might want to get a few more breeds of roosters to keep the breeds clear, but for now this will do.. ahhh life is good. Grow little chickies grow
