Ha, well I am in the Technology sector as well so I guess the long hours just go along with it. But I can't complain, it's a good job. I'm just so happy I'm finally got an incubator! So you will be in lock down pretty soon-post some pictures!

March 7th hatch. On day 12. I gave up candling my BCMs and Ameraucanas. They're too difficult to see with my LED flashlight. I'll jus keep all eggs in the bator viable or not. I wonder how high is the risk I'm taking as far as an egg eggsploding

Is it bound to happen???

cook_kaka_ook: I had one explode once, but that was before I was told to see if they smell. So, if they smell yucky, you know what to do. It's asta la vista baby!

I just set 14 Ameraucana eggs, 12 Wheaten Marans eggs, and 11 Black Copper Marans eggs - Should be due the 18 I believe, as I set them preeetty late at night, and the temps are still rising to their desired equilibrium. I know I know.

- pics are on another thread, if you'd like to see the glory that is Ameraucana and Marans eggs, ask away

But I hope they all do well!!!!

When you say yucky, do you mean really yucky? I notice unwashed eggs can sometimes have a little smell to them, kind of like the smell you would expect the inside of a chicken butt to have.

my first try in my brand new incubator. I'm on day 7 and trying to make a candler to check the eggs, confused on what size to make the hole. My babies will be mutts. All my hens are from 2 assortments I got, brown egg layers 6yrs ago and feather footed last year. Most are brahams and cochins but a few are bare legged. My roo is a cross from one of the brown egg layer assortment hens and a roo that was either the free rare chick or a mistake from the hatchery that looked allot like a buff Orpington. So I don't know what I'll get if it works at all.

I just candled my eggs this morning, out of 24 it looks like about 15 are growing.

I think some of them weren't fertile, since I was switching the rooster back and forth a bit between the two coops. And it was also kind of cold when I was collecting the eggs. So if I get 15, I will be more than happy.

Only 2 more weeks to go. . . . .

Good luck to all of you!

cook_kaka_ook: My flashlight does not pick up much detail either. So, if I see "dark mass" in the middle area from Day 10 then I'm hopeful that the egg is viable also & tend to leave some "iffy" eggs in. Between then & Day 18, you will also see (in candling) the "dark mass/chick" has grown/taken up more space; the air cell (wide end)will get a little larger & the clear egg white at the other end (pointed/smaller end) will lessen.

Spore, let me clairfy you tease! Ok, for all you sniffing connoisseurs out there, I will translate, my "yucky" means like rotten eggs. Rotten eggs smell is a good indication that an egg should be removed from the incubator to avoid possible explosion at least by Day 18 before "lockdown."
