D'Angelo N Va. :

Save the Favs, when will you start your April hatching thread....I only got 6 from my first set, but I am not giving up yet. I am ready to start again....maybe this week like Tuesday or Wednesday morning...I will try it agian, hopefully with a better hatch rate this time.

Glad to see that you will be joining us there too. Thanks for hanging in there, I will start the April thread by the end of the week & will post when it is available on this thread.

Second chick hatched this morning. All fluffed out and peeping but still curled in an egg shape, can't seem to lift his head :'( Been giving vitamins and water. Any thoughts? His legs and one wing have little bloody spots from pressing against the sharp egg edges all night long. He has straightened out a little since this morning. Poor little chicky. He's very pretty, pale yellow down with dark spots on his head and stripes on his back (has some ee i think, mutt chicken from our little flock

Oops! I forgot to answer your question.

To put it simply: In the egg, there is a number of veins attached to the chick which keeps them alive; in those veins, there is blood. With a good flashlight you can candle & see them (more so in the earlier stages before the chick grows & fills up the egg mostly. When the chick hatches, you'll see pieces of the membrane, blood & fluid; not to worry. Maybe someone else can explain it further.

Just to add a little more info, the blood vessels you see is where the exchange of blood gases(o2 in, co2 out) take place while the embryo is developing (in other words how it breathes before it hatches) also transfers calcium from the shell to the embryo for bone developement.

P.S. Just finished my 7th day candling on my 46 eggs I set last week, so far so good, all look well but one, its kinda a porus shell so visability is hampered somewhat so I marked it and will check it again on day 10 and should be able to tell more about it. I think I saw movement in the egg but it was ?able at the time so I'm on the right track so far and hope to have better results this round.

I haven't gotten to the computer much for the last few days & see that there have been a few hatches. CONGRATS to all, on your wonderful hatches!! How exciting!!

catdaddyfro: Thanks for you input!

Well, it's late & I got out of bed to see why "Pinta" (one of my Chihuahuas, 14 yrs old) has been bursting out in sporatic barks, like sounding off. Then I remembered that as the last incubated chicks were hatching one night/early morn, she would give out barks then too. She has apparently taken upon herself to be the official "chickies are coming" alert girl. She's on "chick alert tonight! Oh great, it's little sleep for us tonight!!!! She's so funny!

This is Day 19 & my 8 eggs went into lockdown yesterday; there must be a peep coming from there. I split the eggs between 2 bators, & the ones in the 2nd bator no longer look that good (very large air cells) after some temp spikes, so they're still separated; but still looking forward to the other bator. Everything got "tied down" with twist ties to the floor mesh, as my last hatch really knocked things like the temp/hum guage around.

Soaring Chicks - are those the Wheaton eggs that you picked up at our place in Berkeley Springs? I will keep my fingers crossed that you get a great hatch! That would be so exciting. If you can post pictures when the do hatch (or send them to me) I would love to see them. Sorry about that one egg having a crack . . . I didn't notice that! How is the little roo doing?

Do we turn the egg's on day 18 or not? I wasn't sure it is our first chick hatch. I thought we did but I see discrepancies in when people are saying they went into "lock down"?
