Update!!  The second chick to pip, only one to zip, is now out of the shell.  A little miracle.  It's still moving around and trying to stand it looks like and is loud.  Hopefully it will encourage the other chick that has pipped.  

I heard the chick in the kitchen so I went in there and saw it was VERY close so I was able to call my son in so he could watch it hatch.

Well, our total will remain at two. I checked the other eggs (the BCM eggs I bought) and all of them were dead. The total of the 18 marans eggs goes as follows:


13 Fully-formed, fully-feathered chicks that had to have died on day 20/21

4 Early-quiters

1 dud that was never fertilized

So our experiment at hatching is done for the season. Hopefully the next time we won't lose power on day 20 for 30-36 hours at such a crucial time.

I'm glad you got some out of it. Praying they are strong babies, and you won't have to go out and buy 6 new chicks so one doesn't get lonely.

I bought my nephew some bantams this weekend that his mom said he could have but had to stay at my house so these won't be lonely at least. Two Ameraucana chicks with now five bantams. They should be and interesting flock. I'm also getting Augsburger chicks at the end of the month.

Coming in late on this hatch i guess.Anyone just starting?I set my silkie and EE eggs yesterday so due April 1 st
This is my first hatch since last June i feel like ive forgotten everything

The bantams for my nephew came from TSC. As for my two, the last one to hatch is a roo for sure. His sister is finally getting a bit more stable on her feet though she is still falling over a bit. I'm sure that they'll both be back up one their feet by morning.

I just set +50 more duck eggs.
We are going to have our hands full with +100 duck eggs & +30 chicken eggs.
