I had a 1yr old chicken start acting funny one day I separated it from the flock for 3 months it seemed to get better so I put it back in with the others. A month later we had a chicken acting fine one day no signs of weight loss or anything else the next it came out of roost that morning and feel over and died. Somewhere in the 2-3 weeks later the chicken that originally got sick died the same way. However this chicken because it had shown signs of sickness all of which I tried to treat for various things the vet said it could be I sent this chicken off for testing. It came back mareks disease. The vet said not to eat the eggs for at least 2-3 weeks. It has been about a month since the last chicken died all the others look well except for 1 the rooster won't let out of the coop. she comes out to eat and drink at dark when the others are roosting. She has lost weight but not sure if shes sick also or just because he won't let her out. She acts fine other wise. I have read the articles on this disease and I'm trying to understand it a little better. I'm confused because the vet said he wouldn't eat the chickens or eggs anymore he would start over or just leave them alone. From what I've read they are fine to eat and eggs should be fine also. I hate to take out the flock I have 7 left out of the 9 we started with. We got everyone in the spring from chicks except the 2, 1yr olds. I know there is no getting this out of the soil etc. Can anyone clarify what I need to do? Between what I'm reading and the vet I'm lost. thanks for any help
