A super long-shot - *FROM A MAREK’S-POSITIVE FLOCK*
4 month-old Lavender Ameraucana x Brahma (best guess - he's a "sage egger") cockerel. He was vaccinated against Marek’s at 4 days old (NOT within 36h of hatch, as recommended), and has been asymptomatic thus far but must be considered a Marek’s carrier; one of our hens recently died of Marek’s.
On the off-chance that someone else with a Marek’s-positive flock is
- working on breeding for Marek’s resistance or
- wants a pretty rooster and wants to minimize exposing unexposed chicks to Marek’s if they can avoid it
and is interested in this handsome guy, please let me know. I know it’s highly unlikely, given that it’s hard enough to rehome perfectly healthy roosters, but I want to try every avenue I can to find him a home to live as long as he can. If you have a Marek’s flock, you probably already know this, but different strains act differently and have different levels of virulence, so it is still an additional risk to introduce a potential new strain into a Marek’s flock, though slightly less so within a closer geographic area.
He was an accidental cockerel purchased before there was any indication of Marek’s in our flock and I can’t legally keep him. With the part-Brahma genes, I was hoping for a little more time before he showed signs of hitting puberty, but he is starting to bug the pullets (though too terrified of the hens to approach them); he’s also learning to tidbit and look out for his girls and has started crowing, and, as heartbreaking as it is, one way or another, he must go. This is not at all how I thought chicken-keeping would play out. Feel free to contact me with any questions.
