Hi all,
I have 9; 4 month old pullets and one of them (a RIR) I noticed was sick yesterday. she seems to be partially paralized on one side, her eye is partially closed, wing droops and foot doesnt work right, she can stand only for very short periods and can walk but with much difficulty. I brought her in and placed her in a box with a light. she has no obvious respiratory symptoms, breathing seems fine. she has an appetite and is eating, drinking and pooping normal. her one eye that is open is bright and she is alert and peeps fine but stays still, quiet and laying down most of the time. I am feeding her yogurt, vitamins and organic cider vinegar in her water, her regular pullet developer and a few grains of some leftover amoxicillin in the yogurt daily, as the book says a secondary infection is often the cause of death with mareks or newcastle.
I am guessing at mareks or newcastle but I really dont know because of no respiratory problems. I have the chicken health handbook, (which is a great resource, but if you read it through you have to wonder how barnyard chickens made it through the ages!) and I am confused by the lack of resp. symptoms, am I missing something here? In anyones experience, how long might it take for a little pullet to recover from this?
I will keep her inside and fed, warm, and watered and hope she makes it through this. her companion pullets seem fine, 4 br, 2 SLW, 1 BSL, and 1 other RIR, but I will keep an eye on them daily. You more experienced chicken folk please chime in here and I will keep this thread updated. This is my first chicken doctoring experience in treating disease. I have had mixed luck with injuries, but I will keep on trying and learning.
I feel blessed to have this place to even bring these issues up!

Blessed Be,
Laurie

OK, maybe I shouldnt have sounded off like I had it all figured out, because I dont.
Surely someone more knowledgeable than I, who has only read a good textbook on chicken health, is on board this forum and read this post.

I Think I am doing everything right to help my little pullet live, but, I could use some sage advice or at least pats on the head at this point. she is scarfing down food as I type this, I just changed her bedding, food, and water and she seems very comfortable for a chicken that cant stand on her own, I hope this is a good sign.
Do you think this is a good sign as well? anyone?

That sounds purely neurological...perhaps an injury more likely than a disease? Perhaps she hit her head somehow? Does she have any lumps or signs of injury on her head (it would be on the "healthy" side of her head)?
