Mareks vaccine in CANADA?

Did Rochester Hatcheries wind up having it? We just had confirmed Mereks in our flock . So far we have lost 50% of the new chicks (now 3 months old) we bought at a local sale. All our older hens are doing well. We are Trying to plan for the future if I cull (really really don’t want to as our chickens are my kids pets) or raise our own and vaccinate.

I’m in the process of finding vaccines for my eggs that I’m hatching! Seems to be impossible! I’m in grande prairie Alberta and I called my local vet that deals with livestock, yah they looked into it and they said they won’t offer the service because it comes in 1000 doses and they need nitroglycerin storage to store it, they don’t have that type of storage I guess. I don’t have that many chicks I will be raising. My neighbour had mereks and now my hens have got it and about half of my flock has died unfortunately. So trying to find a vaccine for these chicks when they hatch. I guess I will contact Rochester farms, I guess there is a hatchery in barrhead for the closest one to me, so I will check that out and update my progress!

That’s basically where I ended up. I found someone to source the vaccine but they don’t have the equipment to keep it longer than like 5 hours. All the vets here don’t have the equipment to keep it either. I got the ILT and Newcastle / bronchitis vaccines from the poultry vet here. But no Mareks. Interestingly - I found out that the local hatchery here doesn’t vaccinate their day old layer chicks that they sell. Only if they are keeping them to sell later as ready to lay or 6 week olds / started chicks. And they sell thousands. Man it’s crazy to think we can’t get this vaccine.

I was reading that they sell the vaccine in the US at feed stores. I think there are more restrictions here in Canada!

It’s unfortunate some hatcheries don’t vaccinate for mareks! I’ve noticed that some of the hatcheries I was looking to get some chicks from don’t vaccinate. I guess if they follow proper bio security, cull the infected and clean the coops and area after a possible case then they don’t have much of an issue. I think that’s what I’m going to do. Power wash and sterilize my coop before I introduce my guys and gals then hope for the best. I ordered some expensive and rare breed eggs to hatch so... I need to do my due diligence! Or else just a waste and sad face 😞

Ya same - I also read that you can get it at the feed stores in the US. So much easier ! Its definitely frustrating when you’re trying to do the right thing and vaccinate but it’s like jumping through fire hoops lol. I’m trying to get people to give me the down low on how they got the vaccine. But so far I’m not getting anything specific.

I know this thread is old but I’m also trying to find the vaccination. Any luck anyone ?

Hey Everyone!

My name is Kara and I am in Ontario, I am a poultry breeder Red Rowan Acres. I have been looking for vaccines for the past year with no luck and working with a vet in Ontario Hockley Mobile Vet. This week I received my necropsy and my birds have Marek's. I've lost 2/3 of my 100+ bird flock. I need vaccines and I am trying to figure out how to make this possible for us smaller flocks that love our birds.

I discovered several issues in the Canadian market. The vaccines the offer need to be shipped on liquid nitrogen, only last about 1 week, need to be given to 1 day old birds. Once the vaccine is activated it only last for a couple hours and all of us know chicks don't all hatch at the same time. A 1000 dose is only around $50.00 however all these companies require a $1500-$2000 minimum purchase.

I emailed a couple Canadian suppliers, the Ontatio Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and was put in touch with another vet. He said the issue is there is an initial cost of roughly $300, 000.00 for the vaccine company to produce a new label for a smaller dose. The vaccine companies don't see a return in investment.

Also in the US they seem to offer a different vaccine that only needs to be refrigerated so it's much easier to ship.

I would love to see this resolved! Follow me on IG and Facebook for updates. I might need help!!

If you feel like sending out an email to plead for vaccines. I have been addressing this as an animal welfare issue and I got a response from Ontario lead vet in animal welfare today.

Hi Kara, I’m possibly just reinventing the wheel here In Alberta, but the number of small flock owners has grown this past year exponentially so there is a huge need in Canada for the Zoetis mareks vaccine that is available in the US, and is safe to store in a fridge. I’m trying here to see if we can bring it in, but there appear to be so many hurdles. Have you had any luck or heard any more?
I spoke with one hatchery here and they said that 4 yrs ago they didn’t sell to small flock owners because there was so little demand, but now they constitute 10% of all their chick sales.
Keep on trying. If we all try together we’ll have more impact!
