Do you think it'd be possible to adapt the pump to run off of solar instead of electric?

absolutely! most small solar panels are 6 or 12 volt.

you can even get solar fountain kits that could be modified for this..

I have one of those solar pumps and have been messing around with another design just for the solar folks.
